GIG & ALBUM NEWS: JAWS tour & new album released 4th November

0

‘Simplicity’ is JAWS first outing since their frenzied debut LP ‘Be Slowly’ in 2014. Opting for a short period of silence to recalibrate – the band resurfaced with hazy new single ‘What We Haven’t Got Yet’ – a truculent slice of surf rock, that rides the rip curl of pop refrain.

Their latest dreamy cut ‘Right In Front Of Me’ is the band’s most developed material to date. Recorded following sessions at Vale Studios, alongside producer Gethin Pearson, the track is a wash of echo and unsullied indie innocence, Connor Schofield’s familiar vocals drenched in the foam of its creation.

Formed in Birmingham in 2012, JAWS were identified as being part of the Digbeth B-Town scene and were part of a group of bands from the Midlands that won wider acclaim. Their debut record ‘Be Slowly’ was produced by Oliver Horton (Swim Deep, Foals, Cymbals) and saw the band tour alongside Peace and Spector. In 2015 JAWS shared ‘Bad Company’ via Huw Stephens Radio 1 show. Reformed and re-energised the band are closing in with second full-length release ‘Simplicity’ – scheduled for release November4 2016.

Connor Schofield (vocals, guitar), Alex Hudson (guitar), Eddy Geach (drums), Jake Cooper (bass).

ALBUM NEWS: Dennis release debut album ‘Open Your Eyes’

0

Produced by Darren Hall on location at Easington Lane Miners Hall & Empty Shop Durham and mastered by Andy Baldwin (Coldplay, Blur, Arcade Fire, Oasis) at Metropolis London, the “Open Your Eyes” LP follows three acclaimed Dennis EP releases – The Caroline EP, The Heppedune EP and The Colliery Welfare EP.

We asked one of our writers Frank for his thoughts, this is what he said:

“Well the way the band describe themselves might well be misleading, what we have here in the up-tempo tracks are surprisingly soulful catchy songs that’ll have you foot tapping and dancing pretty quickly.

“Yes there’s that folk thing coming through in the slower songs but this isn’t in any way purist folk. This is great stuff that reminds me – in a really good way of Squeeze, you know the ballady and poppy stuff they did, in places.

“These are well written, well arranged and well played songs that is just, well, great music.”

You can buy the LP through Sapien Records: http://www.sapienrecords.com/dennis

EP REVIEW: The Lungs – ‘Julianna Buttermaker’

0

York two-piece The Lungs – Theo Mason Wood and Bonnie Milnes – have released their ‘Julianna Buttermaker’ EP. If The Lungs are new to you then you can learn more about them later but first the EP.

OK so this is set of three songs about the Julianna Buttermaker in the EP name. The story that is told is dark, twisted and distinctly disturbing. But there were a lot of moments that had me laughing out loud.

Quite how you even attempt to describe this musically I’m not sure, so here’s what I thought as I heard it the first time – Cowboy Junkies, Leonard Cohen, Everything But The Girl (the early years), The Fugs, Tom Waits, The Civil Wars, early British punk, Camper Van Beethoven, folk … so I hope you’re getting the picture The Lungs are not an easy band to pigeon hole. And while they might describe themselves as Southern Gothic that’s not going to help one bit.

Lyrically this is like a folk ballad, the three parts tell the story of a relationship. The words are great – they are sad, dark, funny and clever. And if you really listen, and I mean really really listen you’re going to find odd bits of lyrics popping into your head randomly. Today I keep hearing “and now the big adventure is our garden’s runner beans” and “you’ve got a motor car and I’ve got a bag of crisps” (personal favourite of mine that). And honest those do fit into the story.

Look the EP is a bit like one of those weird American art-house films with great performances that has you laughing one moment, crying the next and at the end – however it ends, and I don’t want to give away the whole story – you’re left thinking ‘that was beautiful’. Yet when you try and tell people quite how wonderful it was they just look at you in a strange way. Perhaps it’s just me but at the end of the three parts I was left thinking ‘that was was beautiful’. You may well be left thinking that was really funny or even that’s a nice set of quirky songs. That’s perfectly OK as long as you’ve noticed the great lyrics, the wonderfully contrasting vocals of Theo and Bonnie, and the rather fine lo-fi production.

Luckily there is a video of Part 1 on the duo’s Facebook Page so you can actually listen to the first part of the story.

This a bitter-sweet, funny, dark twisted gem of an EP. When I first listened to it I described it as adorable, and yep it is something to be adored.

The EP is available from all major digital outlets – you know Google, iTunes that sort of thing.

thelungs1The Lungs

So who are The Lungs. According to their bio – and bearing in mind that this pair have one great sense of humour, you may or may believe it – Theo & Bonnie first met when they were about eight, becoming friends on family holidays together in the seaside village of Staithes.

Theo had worked through a variety of instruments in his childhood eventually settling on a guitar his Mum had lying around the house which he began to invent chords for, whilst Bonnie learned to sing listening to classic Motown and soul.

They didn’t start playing together until their teens; Theo had been through a few bands without really knowing what he wanted to do, and played a gig in York Bonnie came along to. After the gig her friends convinced Bonnie to sing a few songs; bringing the house down the promoter asked her to come back and do more but she didn’t have enough songs to fill a set, so Theo suggested playing as a duo and The Lungs were born.

They started jamming with covers until stumbling across ‘Papa was a Rodeo’ by the Magnetic Fields, with it’s deep drawling American vocals that Theo discovered suited his voice to perfection and beautifully contrast Bonnie’s soulful style.

“For me lyrics became the most important part of the writing, as I’ve never been much of a guitarist and then Bonnie’s amazing vocals are kind of the music side of the band.” Explains Theo, “We go back and forward on songs, I’ll write a chorus, Bonnie will give it a vocal melody, I’ll write more from that and so on.”

“I can write a decent pop song, it’s a lot of what I listened to growing up,” comments Bonnie, “but Theo introduced me to darker, less feel-good music which is arguably more interesting. I couldn’t do what Theo does and the dynamic works with him solely writing the lyrics.”

Theo continues, “I like each song to have a narrative or character to follow through a journey, which is often in a bleak and sad world not too dissimilar from our own, but full of dark humour to keep it all digestible.”

The pair signed with York’s Young Thugs Records earlier this year and the EP will be The Lungs’ first release on the fledgling label. Released on 17th October it will be accompanied a full UK tour in December/January, with sights very much focused on an album for next year.

“We’re writing songs for it over winter.” says Theo, “After that we’d like to get a long string of awards and be hounded by the press until one of us dies of an overdose and the other goes on to have a great career as the one who lived.”

So what I’ve missed out here is the part of bio that actually explains what the story of the EP is. If I put this here you’re going to miss out on the fun part – working out what the songs are about and how they link together.

SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Meadowlark release ‘Headlights, announced as support for Aquilo

0

Meadowlark have unveiled the official video for their new single ‘Headlights’. Directed by the band’s very own Dan Broadley, the video is one continuous shot which called for some meticulous advance planning. Speaking about this approach, Dan explained: “The video for Headlights began as a creative concept, a video shot all in one take, seamless and constantly in motion. The expressive dancing explores many of the complex emotions that fuel a relationship, the passion, the rage, the bubble that encapsulates both bodies. Meanwhile Kate and myself weave in and out of this energetic routine, narrating the story from the lyrics whilst remaining invisible to the characters.”

‘Headlights’ is the latest single from the Bristol based boy-girl duo and follows two recent standalone singles ‘Paraffin’ and ‘Quicksand’, both of which have gained Meadowlark widespread acclaim for their captivating pop melodies and lush production. Signed to Believe Recordings (James Vincent McMorrow, Gavin James), the band have a debut album on the horizon for 2017.

Having embarked on their own UK headline tour in September, Meadowlark will be back out on the road from next week supporting Aquilo. Tickets for the October dates are on sale now.

SINGLE & GIG NEWS: GANG announce single & support slot on Wand tour

0

Brighton’s GANG will release their wonderfully twisted macabre new 7” single, ‘Dead’ / ‘Enough Nothing’, on November 25th via Ra-Ra Rok Records.

Following their praised ‘Animalia’ 7”, released earlier this year via Corner Shop Pop Records alongside a self-organised tour of the UK, and a BBC 6Music session with Marc Riley, ‘Dead’ arrives in a haze of mystic fuzz and tangled dirge-pop.

“Dead was written following an epiphany of sorts,” singer and guitarist Eric Tormey explains. “A cold, universal light leaked through my skull as I drowned in anxiety, showing me the insignificance of human struggle. We are self-aggrandising bacteria on the surface of a rock floating in a huge, mostly empty space. Anything we do or think is inconsequential, and there is only one outcome. One day our earth will be gone, any trace of anything anyone has ever known will be gone. There will be no rights or wrongs, no alternate paths. All the glorious and tragic events of humanity will compress into one finite moment. At first this prospect terrified me. I lay quivering on the floor until the following morning, holding my mother’s hand while my father proclaimed that I “had probably had some bad speed”. As the days, weeks and months passed I developed a sense of clarity. I realised that to focus on what’s important in one’s life is all there is to do. Don’t be governed by petty desires that are thrust upon you. You don’t need wealth, or love, or sex, or fame, or recognition. Look inside yourself and see what it is you desire. Anything else is fool’s play.”

Originally from Canterbury and Margate, now residing in Brighton, Gang are brothers Eric and Jimi Tormey and adopted sibling Joseph Hunt. Relying on a strong set of ethics, driven by the ethos to ‘do it themselves’, they seek to remain unified, not unaided. “To separate us is to conquer us, and unity is strength”, Jimi explains of their manifesto. “For this reason we surround ourselves with likeminded, creative individuals, forming a community – Gang is a messiah, an illustrator, a photographer, a videographer. We are any and all who aid us. Each of us is branded with a Gang tattoo committing ourselves to unity. D.I.Y, as we know it, is dead – R.I.P to D.I.Y – killed by vapid, lo-fi bedroom pop. We’ll D.I.O until we D.I.E.”

‘Dead’ stems from modern apathy,” Jimi continues. “We’re all dying right now and sadly in this modern, consumerist age we are taught, throughout life, to be concerned most with the clothes that cover us and represent us in death. Because of this we’ll be releasing this song alongside a clothing item with our friends at Terrible Merch (post ironic, huh?). If life is like writing a letter, then dying is one’s signature and death itself is the sealing of the envelope. We need not fear the end because it is one’s life that will echo in the words of the letter. One end is a new beginning and as long as the postal service doesn’t misplace you then the lives we have led will echo endlessly. So why don’t we stop trying to feed the void with money’s lack of sustenance and try to get a better feel for what’s important. We don’t want to feel better. We want to better feel.”

Gang have spent 2016 touring the UK, playing alongside Sub Pop’s So Pitted and US sludge-lords Wand, who Gang will reunite with on a small UK tour through November on the dates below. All of Gang’s music is recorded by Eric at Barnroom Studios, the garage/studio of their father, cult guitarist Bernie Tormé (Ex-Ozzy Osbourne & Atomic Rooster), utilising the weird and wonderful recording equipment that he has collected over the years.

GIG NEWS: Molotov Jukebox announce ‘Just The Thrill’ winter tour

0

The summer saw Natalia Tena and the band take to the main stages and headline slots at festival such as Secret Garden Party, BoomTown Fair, Lindisfarne Festival, Kendal Calling, Lakefest, Blissfields and international shows in Germany, Ukraine, Spain, Italy and Belgium.

The success of the first two singles from the album ‘Pineapple Girl’ and ‘If I Knew’ brings the third to the forefront in the form of ‘Just The Thrill’. A more laidback affair, but with lashings of Molotov charm throughout. And in true Molotov Jukebox tradition, the single will be accompanied by a standout video shot on the streets (and pools!) of London Town. Here is what Natalia has said about the track..

This song centers around the idea that a fantasy has more of a pull than reality and maybe because the narrator has been there before, doesn’t immediately fall into fantasy’s arms, get submerged and let go of the anchor that is real life.

It’s a song posed in the throes of a lust affair that may or may not be physical, it could just be all in the narrator’s mind, which adds, I hope, a more desperate lost landscape to the song.

Above all we were trying to make a sexy little song, a number that pinned down the mystery of that chess game that first starts any spark between 2 humans.

If the last few tours are anything to go by, tickets will fly out for these intimate shows, as the tropical sounds of Molotov Jukebox are some of the most infectious sounds to be heard in the UK scene.

EP NEWS: The Homesteads will release their EP through Alya Records on 21st October.

0

After the release of their 2014 debut LP, ‘The City We Call’, the Sheffield rock outfit took some time to go back to the drawing board. And they found their sound.

The Homesteads will release their new self-titled EP through DMF Digital’s Alya Records on 21 October. The EP is led by the new single, ‘Clear The Skies’, which is available now. And you can watch the video on their Facebook page

‘Clear The Skies’ is a battle cry to pursue your dreams, and the drums are at the centre, as Richardson sings: “Remain in your ivory tower, if a tree falls it still makes a sound.” Its resounding intent to not have regrets or opportunities missed.

“We want people to know the minute they turn this record on we mean business,” he
said.

Recorded at Air Tight Studios in Manchester with producer Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest), the 4-track EP uses a layered approach to achieve the potent blend of rhythm and rock they were hoping for.

We asked our writer Frank for his thoughts on the EP – which we lucky enough to get a preview of it – and here’s what he said:

“The band say ‘Think Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, Radiohead’ – or at least that’s what the press release says, and yep for me there’s that huge but stripped back Manics sound there but it’s not a slavish copyist sound. The Homesteads have a sound that is very much their own. And to that list of touchstones I’d add Springsteen, it has that muscular sound.

“And while there’s obviously some very careful production at work here, it doesn’t take away from the raw energy of their sound. And let’s not forget the lyrics which are great, I like a nice lyric and these four tracks tick that box.

“For me at least the two stand-out tracks are ‘Saturday’ and the single ‘Clear The Skies’ which switches things up with some really nice acoustic sections.

“Get this if you like raw rock played with a passion and feeling. I’ve said it before but cue this EP up and turn it up loud. Still don’t quite get that Radiohead reference though.”

The Homesteads are Ashley Richardson (vocals), Aaron Ventura (lead guitar), Luke
Riley (guitar), Jack Thickett (bass guitar) and Alex Fell (drums).
