GIG NEWS: PROSE announced as support on JP Cooper’s tour and headline tour in November

0

Following their run of dates supporting indie legends the Enemy, Manchester bred storyteller’s PROSE have been selected as main support for fellow Mancunian singer JP Cooper ahead of their own UK headline tour in November.

The three-piece showcase their unique mix of hip-hop, indie and classic songwriting when they enter the stage as their rawness and infectious energy brings out the power of their music.

PROSE are picking up support across the length and breadth of the country with their busy touring schedule but some of the newest fans have had their introduction to the band via third single ‘Further’ which was hailed as Radio X ‘Shock of the New’ and subsequently added to the Radio X Evening Playlist. But loyal support from BBC Introducing in Manchester has continued since their first upload as an unsigned act, and led onto plays from Radio 1’s tastemakers Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart, and which also gained them a highly-coveted addition to the Radio 1 Introducing Playlist last month.

The band’s debut album ‘Home of the Brave’, out now on Naughty Records/Virgin EMI, is a perfect distillation of everything that makes them great, anthemic tales of life and love growing up on Manchester council estates. They have an authentic working class voice that can sometimes be missing from some British music.

After being signed by high profile Brit producer Naughty Boy to his own record label, the band have been on a steady upwards trajectory and proving themselves to be an incredibly promising new voice in British music.

SHVPES’ current single, ‘Skin & Bones’, now has an official accompanying video! Check it out here: http://vevo.ly/BNQWBU

“This song is about maintaining your integrity when you’re surrounded by people who are trying to diminish it,” explains front-man Griffin Dickinson. “It’s taken from my time at school, where it seemed that being in any way different to the ‘norm’ meant you were ostracised and ridiculed for your differences. This song is both in recognition of how much it got to me, plus a reminder to never let that mentality take hold of me again.”

It was important to the band that the theme of the song be well illustrated in the accompanying clip…

“The video represents someone who feels like an alien in their surroundings, alone & encircled by people who take them as some sort of gimmick, but they do their own thing regardless.”

Meanwhile, SHVPES will embark on a 17-date run of UK shows this October/November, taking in headline, co-headline & festival appearances…

ALBUM & GIG NEWS: Jack Savoretti releases a brand new album, ‘Sleep No More’, announces tour

0

On this career -defining album, Jack Savoretti has well and truly found his voice, both as a singer and as a songwriter. The first single ‘When We Were Lovers’ sets the tone with its big heart and spellbinding rhythm.

Jack describes the album as a “love letter to my wife” and provides some insight into the album’s title. “The whole point of this album is that it’s about the stuff that keeps you up at night,” Jack explains.

There’s an infectious restlessness that drives the album. Each song is a tremendous showcase for his exceptional voice from the honest warmth of ‘I’m Yours’, to the anthemic ‘We Are Bound’ to the pure joy of ‘Any Other Way’ all powered by addictive choruses.

Jack worked with a variety of producers including Mark Ralph (Years and Years/Take That), Sam Dixon (Adele), Matty Benbrook (Paolo Nutini), Cam Blackwood (George Ezra) and Steve Robson (James Bay, John Newman and James Morrison).

Jack and his wonderful band embark on a ten date UK tour this November including his biggest show to date at London’s Eventim Apollo November 9th.

FRANK’S COLUMN: Music to clear rooms with

0

Band of Holy Joy: ‘Who Snatched the Baby’
From: ‘More Tales From The City’

I might describe this as a wonderful piece of discordant mutant music hall, others might be less charitable and describe it as ‘just horrid’. This one of two songs that have actually caused somebody to rip the needle from a record when I put it on.

Samothrace: ‘A Horse of Our Own’
From: ‘Reverence to Stone’

Imagine if you will a Black Sabbath track slowed down to around a third of it’s original speed, that’s what this sounds like. This is a bit of slow burner. After about five minutes people will be asking “So does it go on like this all the way through, aren’t there any vocals, and how long is it?”. To which the answers are; well it has loud bits and quiet bits but no tune as such, no there are no vocals beyond some wordless screaming and shouting, and it lasts 20 minutes and 29 seconds. At which point turn it way up and people will soon be leaving.

Hedvig Mollestad Trio: ‘Liquid Bridges’
From: ‘Enfant Terrible’

The Hedvig Mollestad Trio are difficult to describe – often a useful indicator of whether people are going to dislike something in my experience. I might describe them as talented musicians playing experimental jazz influenced prog or prog influenced jazz-rock. Others may describe it as ‘noodling around on musical instruments to very little effect’. Actually virtually any HMT track is going to get people reaching for their coats. If there are still people in the room after this you might try ‘La Boule Noire’ from the same album.

Cardiacs: ‘Go Off and Things’
From: Several versions exist but my choice would be the one from ‘Seaside’

Cardiacs are truly the Marmite of rock – you either love them or hate them. The other possibility is that you’ve never heard of them I’d suppose. I’ve never yet met anyone who sort of likes Cardiacs, it’s all or nothing. As a fan I’ve been known to go up to strangers wearing Cardiacs t-shirts and compliment them on their great taste – I did this at the recent Fall gig for example. He didn’t hit me, we just chatted about when we first saw the band and went our separate ways. Most Cardiacs songs will drive people out of your home but don’t try ‘The Whole World Window’ because if you don’t tell people it’s Cardiacs they are likely to quite like it. I’ve chosen this track and this version because it’s incredibly fast, has fast choppy vocals and a saxophone solo.

Van Der Graaf Generator: ‘Door’
From: ‘Vital’

You need to be careful with your choice of Van Der Graaf Generator track, most of their stuff is quite tasteful. This however is a different kettle of fish. You’re going to be helped by the spoken intro – it’s a live track – explaining that the track is about a group of people in a room looking for the door, and then it launches into a cacophony of growled vocal and shrill saxophone. To me wonderful to others … well it’s the other track that has caused somebody to rip the needle from the record.

Dollar: ‘Shooting Star’

For those of who read my previous column on perfect music you’ll remember that this is included in that list. So why have I included it here? Well, there are some people out there who fail to see it’s pop perfection and consider it a cheesy pop song. Obviously this isn’t going to work with everyone but if you’ve got a room full of ‘people who consider themselves serious music fans’ it’s a sure-fire room clearer.

https://youtu.be/dsFx2dIe2N8

Altered Images: ‘Happy Birthday’
From: ‘Happy Birthday’

While I may consider this to be a pop classic there are others who find this extremely – how do we put this – irritating. If asked why, they might mention the lyrics, the plinky sounds at the start or just say ‘oh no not Altered Images, you can’t be serious’ as they leave.

Incredible String Band: Most of their songs

I adore ISB, as do many others, so if you’re going to take this option you need to to pick your crowd carefully. You may find that some people leave, having displayed signs of irritation, while others sit, nodding sagely and mouthing the words. They may even break into song. If that’s the case I suggest following it with Samothrace and then Dollar.

Deep Purple: Concerto for Group and Orchestra

Ah Concerto. This one even causes conflict amongst Purple fans. Some of them consider this to rank up high up there in the best Purple albums – I’m in that group. Whereas others consider to be an overblown piece of pseudo-classical rock. I recall that I almost came to blows at a Reading Festival in the early 80s over how good or bad this album is. It was during this incident that I had one of the sleeves of my favourite Motorhead t-shirt ripped off – something that my friend decided would only be fixed by ripping the other one off. He decided to do this in the middle of the road by setting his foot into my armpit and just yanking. I went flying into the path of a small lorry. Good times indeed. Anyway back to Concerto. The key here, as with Samothrace, is the length of the thing. Rock fans may enjoy say the first five to eight minutes but beyond that …

So there you have it, a list of room-clearers. Some or all may work for you.

I realise that it’s a bit unfair of me not to mention at least a few things that would have have me reaching for my coat, so here goes, ‘Dr Beat’ by Miami Sound Machine – not only do I really dislike the music but it comes with some really bad memories, that frog thing – I can’t even bring myself to look up the title, most Moody Blues, most pop-house music – you know that stuff they called house that got into the charts but wasn’t really proper house at all, most things by winners of TV talent shows – especially cover versions of classic songs and finally any song that has a dance or set of moves that go with it that everyone seems to know and will launch into if suitably ‘refreshed’.

FESTIVAL NEWS: Free bus and jazzed up bus stop for 25th Marsden Jazz Festival

0
Kevin Carr (left) and Sian AlMahfudhi (right) from South Pennine Community Transport and Tina Shaw (centre), Street Coordinator from Marsden Jazz Festival

Festival goers will be able to get the bus from a stop on Manchester Road, opposite the New Inn, which will be decorated in a New Orleans style – complete with tassels.

The free bus will operate from 7pm to 11pm on Friday 7 October, 12pm to 11pm on Saturday 8 October, and 11am to 7pm on Sunday 9 October, taking passengers to and from gigs at the Carriage House, Standedge Tunnel Visitors’ Centre, Dark Woods Coffee and Marsden Cricket Club.

A new late night jazz bus will also run on Friday and Saturday nights between 11pm and midnight to Saddleworth, Slaithwaite and Huddersfield after trains and regular buses have ended.

Tickets for the late night bus cost £5 and can be purchased in advance from the box office and, space permitting, on the buses.

Festival Producer Barney Stevenson said:

“It’s really easy to get to Marsden by bus and train, and the free bus service being provided by South Pennine Community Transport will make it really easy to get around our 25 venues as well.

“We’re keen to see more people coming here using public transport as this helps to reduce parking pressures.

“We’re only 13 minutes by rail from Huddersfield and the new late night bus service means people will be able to get a bus home to Saddleworth, Slaithwaite or Huddersfield after a day of live music once other public transport services have stopped.”

Marsden Jazz Festival was named ‘Outstanding Established Festival’ at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Grassroots Awards 2015, and thousands of music lovers make their way to Marsden by train, bus, car and narrow boat every year for the festival weekend.

This year’s Marsden Jazz Festival is taking place between Friday 7 and Sunday 9 October 2016. Tickets are on sale now and can booked online at www.marsdenjazzfestival.com, by calling 0800 6125 649 (10am-4pm, Monday-Friday), or at the jazz festival office in the library at Marsden Mechanics (10am-4pm, Tuesday-Friday).

ALBUM & GIG NEWS: Astraluna launches her new album ‘The Pass of Storms’ at Otley Parish Church 15th October

0

With songs ranging from epic soundscapes to stripped down emotions, Astraluna’s haunting live vocals compliment her warm ukulele sound. The ten tracks on the album are original compositions written over the past year, drawing inspiration from the smallest sensitivities to the largest landscapes. Sometimes delicately ethereal, with layered vocals and harp-like fingerpicking, at others driven by rhythmic chord work, the atmospheric ambience of Otley’s Parish Church is a perfect compliment to the live version of the album.

Astraluna is the stage name of Jennifer Birch of Otley’s Woolpack Music Studios, where the album was recorded before being mixed by Steve Chrisanthou of 600 Feet Productions (producing, amongst others, Corinne Bailey Rae and Newton Faulkner).

Before she embarked on her Astraluna solo project, Jennifer had been an experienced touring musician, having performed in bands in venues across the world, from Glastonbury to LA and more. She says “it’s always been an ambition of mine to write and perform as a solo artist. I love the music scene in Otley and can’t think of a better place than the Parish Church to perform the songs for the first time.”

The album will be available on itunes and Amazon, and streamed on spotify on 15th October, and CDs will be available for purchase from that day as well. CDs can be obtained by post via Astraluna’s website

Launch gig

Otley Parish Church
15th October 2016

Signed copies of the album and other merchandise will be available for purchase at the event. Entry to the gig is free. Doors and bar open at 7.30pm.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Billy Bragg & Joe Henry release ‘Shine A Light’, announce tour dates

0

Like many a British musician before him, Billy Bragg, bard of Barking, singer songwriter, political activist, and musical historian has made no secret of his obsession with the songs and the mythology of the Americas, not least those of his artistic and philosophical forebear Woody Guthrie. With his friend and collaborator, US singer songwriter Joe Henry, he has made an album that focuses on the transformative part the railroad played in disseminating the songs that gave birth to the rock’n’roll era. ‘Shine A Light – Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad’ by Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, released on Cooking Vinyl on 23rd September ’16, is a collection of railway-themed classic songs recorded in the course of a 65 hour journey across the US on the Texas Eagle railroad service. Featuring thirteen songs originally recorded by legendary singers such as Lead Belly, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Glen Campbell and more, the album is an atmospheric travelogue, a gripping lesson in musicology, but most importantly it is a beautifully recorded collection of wonderful tunes.

In March 2016 Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station. Winding along 2,728 miles of track, the pair recorded songs while the train paused to pick up passengers. In waiting rooms and at the track side in St Louis, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Alpine TX, El Paso and Tucson they set up their recording equipment, and performed classic railroad songs while keeping half an eye on the train and jumping back on board just before pulling out for the next town. After four days crossing the country, they pulled into Los Angeles at 4:30am, recording their final song in Union Station accompanied by the first chirpings of the dawn chorus.

The resulting album ‘Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad’ features the perfectly matched voices of Bragg and Henry and captures the varied atmospheres of the environments in which they recorded—from the close proximity of soft-furnished sleeping cars to the cathedral-like ambience of historic railway stations.

Says Billy: “Railroad songs provided the bedrock of American popular music, from Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman, to Lead Belly, whose repertoire provided several of the songs for this project. In this country, Lonnie Donegan’s 1956 hit ‘Rock Island Line’ sparked the skiffle craze, inspiring a generation of British teens to pick up guitars and form the groups that invaded America in the 60s, from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin.

Growing up in the UK, I’d always been aware of this tradition but when I traveled to the US, I was surprised to find how few people look to the railroad as a means of transport. With this project, we wanted to explore the transformative power that the coming of the railroad had on the lives of ordinary people by taking these songs back to the places that inspired their creation. Traveling on the train and recording the songs as we went allowed us to both visit places that were important 125 years ago when the lines were laid, but to also explore the viability of the railroad as a means of transport in the 21st century.”

Says Joe: “The emergence of the railroad in America boasted of our might and sprawling enormity, yet signaled a deep desire for close community, connectivity. The songs that grew out of and alongside this innovation remain to tell this story of collective national character.”

Billy Bragg and Joe Henry most recently worked together when Henry produced Bragg’s acclaimed 2013 album Tooth & Nail. The duo will tour the UK together later this year, performing songs from ‘Shine A Light’ and more. Full tour details are as follows:

Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 30 years. Among the former Saturday boy’s albums are his punk-charged debut Life’s a Riot With Spy Vs Spy, the more love-infused Workers Playtime, pop classic Don’t Try This At Home, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee-timed treatise on national identity England, Half-English, and his stripped-down tenth, Tooth & Nail, his most successful since the early 90s. The intervening three decades have been marked by a number one hit single, having a street named after him, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Left Field at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria, being mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir and meeting the Queen. At their best, Billy’s songs present ‘the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal’ (the Guardian).

In a career spanning 30 years, Joe Henry has left an indelible and unique imprint on American popular music. As a songwriter and artist, Henry is celebrated for his exploration of the human experience. A hyper-literate storyteller, by turns dark, devastating, and hopeful, he has an author’s eye for the overlooked detail.

Henry has collaborated with many notable artists on his own body of work, from T Bone Burnett, Daniel Lanois, and Van Dyke Parks on one side of the spectrum, to Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Brad Mehldau, and Bill Frisell on the other. A three-time-Grammy-winning producer, Henry has made records for Bonnie Raitt, Hugh Laurie, Lisa Hannigan, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, and many others. In 2015, Henry helmed a recording session for the late Allen Toussaint. The resulting album, American Tunes, will be released this year. In 2013, Algonquin Press published, Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World that Made Him, a book co-written by Joe and his brother Dave Henry.

Henry’s most recent studio album, Invisible Hour, was released on his own Work Song label. The album features numerous guests including The Milk Carton Kids as well as Lisa Hannigan, who co-wrote the title track along with Henry and best-selling novelist Colum McCann. As a solo artist and a producer alike, Henry’s records are marked with a consistent sonic depth, attention to narrative, and emphasis on the beauty of spontaneity.
