Music, munch and mayhem. Could you ask for anymore Leeds?
Band members:
Joel: drums
Lucy: bass
Adam: guitar
Alex: vocals and guitar.
How did you all form the band?
It was a bit of a botch job. We were looking for a drummer, as per and Joel left us a message on Facebook then we all just seemed to gel really quickly and stuff started kicking off. We’ve all been in to music for a long time though, Joel was the baby that hit things with sticks and Alex was that kid on a violin.
Have you had a lot of support from your local music scene?
There are definitely a lot of bands that group together and they can be pretty supportive. At first you’re trying to find where you sit. At first we gigged with either Indie bands or Metal bands but in the last year or so we’ve come across a lot of Pop Punk bands and it’s been really cool finding people with the same common ground.
What made you decide to go down the Pop Punk route?
In terms of influences our biggest ones would be bands like: Fall Out Boy, You Me At Six, Green Day. Them kind of bands, we belong in 2004 really. There’s definitely a new style of Pop Punk coming out but when writing we like to keep it simple and kind of old school; that way its poppy and catchy and easy to sing along to.
It’s what we grew up with in our teenage years so we all have them routes. But when we first started Adam was adamant that we weren’t a pop punk band, he didn’t want to pigeon hole us. It just happened though, there wasn’t any questioning that we were Pop Punk.
As a band do you prefer playing live or recording?
Live’s always the more fun stuff because you get out there and get to just act like an idiot for a bit. With playing live you get instant gratification because you feel the reaction from the crowd straight away, the difference with studio is the constant anticipation you feel. When recording you just want to get it out there and show people but it’s a long process to go through. Generally, though, when you’re doing one thing you start to miss the other.
What’s been your best gig experience so far?
We played with Patent Pending at Corporation in Sheffield and that has been a band we’ve grown up with so it was an absolute honour to play for them. Again in Corp we played a sold out headline show which was pretty crazy, really sweaty but pretty cool.
What’s next for Sweet Little Machine?
We just won a competition which means we’ll be supporting Less Than Jake at the O2 Academy Sheffield. Then we always do a Christmas show and this year we’re doing London and Sheffield so it gives us a chance to head down South. We’ll be back in the recording studio pretty soon as well so a full schedule really.
The latest single: ‘In God We Trust’
Sweet Little Machine take us back to the days of lively party anthems and roaring instrumentals with no hesitation. The bands nonchalant appearance in the music video reflects the composure of their music, a couple of guitars and a drum set thrown together to create something that actually works. With the ever expanding rise in music genres and sub-genres and experimental sounds it was seeming that the days of bellowing catchy Pop Punk lyrics at the top of our voices was over. Sweet Little Machine have emphatically leaped aboard our regression sessions and are bringing back the easy to sing to, easy to dance to beats.
Each member of the band is wholly involved in their instrument and play with a passion for their choice of genre. The mix of instruments and individual personalities can sometimes clash but the band show how they gel as a whole and are able to complement each other’s sound. All together their latest single oozes passion and energy and overwhelmingly encourages the audience to get involved. The beauty of putting such energy into the recorded single is that their music can be enjoyed both live and in private in the same way, which signifies what old school Pop Punk is all about.

Biography
Johnny Lloyd has come a long way before arriving here. From Operahouse to highly-acclaimed indie band Tribes, who split up late 2013, he’s had time for new music to gestate. Working with Jamie T and Hugo White (from The Maccabees), his cheerily-titled debut EP Hello Death is a rousing but melancholic attempt to “find a new place in life”, full of “new beginnings, realisations…”. When we rebuild, our foundations tend to be stronger than ever, and Johnny Lloyd’s groundwork means the sky could be the limit as time goes on.
Praise for ‘Dreamland EP’
“the songwriter’s finest solo moment to date” CLASH
“woozy, washed-out guitar work with a metronomic beat and languid vocals to create a warm psychedelic outing” The Line Of Best Fit
“…his lo-fi melancholy is decidedly unpolished, and it’s all the better for its roughness” Pigeons & Planes
Colour of Spring have released a new single – ‘Snow’. Once again they have teamed up with producer Alex Greaves (The Orielles, TRASH, NARCS, Allusondrugs, Party Hardly, Fighting Caravans) after forming a strong working relationship together on the last two singles. The track will be released by York based label Swirly Records on cassette tape with exclusive B-Sides.’
The band say that the track is mainly about inner conflict. About self analysing your short comings and bad habits while wanting to change them for someone you care for. Snow is the experience of knowing somebody who eventually disappears from your life over time.
We couldn’t resist asking our writer Frank (who reviewed the band’s single ‘Pillow’) what he thought of the new single. This is what he said
“Having been really impressed by ‘Pillow’ I was looking forward to hearing the new track. ‘Snow’ didn’t disappoint. It has a really dream-like quality to the vocals, that really suit the laid-back feel to the song. Yep the guitars are there as we’d expect but they sort of flood over you gradually rather than hitting you in the face – at least at first – there’s that working up to a crescendo section at the end that’ll get your pulse racing, and I love the pulsing sound behind the vocal sections. Somehow, and I may just be imagining it, the sound does sound like snow feels, it sort of settles over you and then you find you’re gradually being completely engulfed (if that makes any sense at all).
“What impresses me is the band have the ability to vary their sound but without losing that essential Colour of Spring-ness, that psychy shoegaze thing. That’s clever.”
That’s pretty clear he’s a fan of the new track – even if we don’t know quite what he’s on about when he says that ‘ the sound does sound like snow feels’.

‘Supreme Foliage’ is the debut EP from this 5-piece psych-influenced rock ‘n’ roll band from Salford.
First impressions, well I’m getting a distinct West Coast psych feel to the songs on the EP, my immediate thought was a hint of Spirit along with tinges of Love. But there’s also some rather fabulous ‘Madchester stuff’ going on there as well. The band have also avoided the opportunity to ‘over-produce’ the tracks. There’s a lovely loose feel to the band’s music that I really hope they don’t loose.
There’s a lot of psych and psychy bands out there but Lavender are bringing something new to the genre. It’s hard to exactly say why but this isn’t that run of the mill psych.
Up first ‘Honey’. Harmonies, some rather wonderful guitar, a semi-submerged vocal. Clever use of effects. Yep I like this a lot. And it has a tune you can hum along to most of the time, you can I tried it out. This is one of the stand-outs for me. ‘Live From a Broken Planet’ is a more upfront rock song, it’s more garage. It’s actually quite poppy, at least in places. For me this is the least successful track on the EP, I don’t mean it’s bad it’s just when you compare it to the other material it’s just not as good.
‘Solar Eclipse’ is the track that had me thinking of Spirit. It has that almost folky finger picked guitar in places and then it takes off into a more rocky feel. Lovely stuff.
The other stand-out track for me is ‘Drowsy’. This is more psych than rock and roll. It’s like a wall of laid-back blissed out guitar washing over you.
So do I recommend this EP? Yes I do. If you like that laid-back psychy thing you’ll love this. And I’ve added Lavender to my ‘bands to watch’ list, I think we’re going to see way more of them down the line.
Hertfordshire four piece The HUNNA have unveiled a brand new video for their latest single ‘Bonfire.’ Following its airplay premiere with Radio 1’s Annie Mac earlier this week, the band also announced the release of their debut album ‘100’ released via High Time Records this summer. Watch ‘Bonfire’ here.
Directed by upcoming director, Haris Nukem, the video encapsulates everything The HUNNA represents seeing them at a rooftop party in the heart of London. Talking about the song, lead singer Ryan said, “Bonfire is the first track we ever wrote as a band, about the troubles faced in our personal lives and how up and down relationships can be.”
Since bursting onto the scene back in October last year, The HUNNA are fast becoming one of the hottest emerging acts of 2016. Not only has previous single ‘You & Me’, had overwhelming support from the likes of Radio 1 (‘New Band of The Week’ in May), 4Music and Kerrang!, the band have amassed a whopping 3.1 million combined streams on Spotify.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family band consisting of 7 blood brothers trained in musical instrumentation since the tender ages of 4 & 5 by their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran (Earth, Wind & Fire. Chaka Khan. Sun ra) who subsequently formed the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble (1990) composed of his children that had now become proficient in their musical presentation. By 1999, the band of brothers discontinued playing with dad in order to find their own sound.
By 2008 Hypnotic Brass had performed their original tunes in every corner of the world to audiences as big as 110,000 and premiere music venues around the world, all accomplished by their self-manned staff and clever partnerships.
The brothers were living in London when they recorded the Gorillaz record with Damon Albarn ‘Welcome to Plastic Beach’ and joined the “Plastic Beach 2010” world tour upon its release performing alongside Bobby Womack, Mick Jones from the Clash, De La Soul & Snoop Dogg. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble gave their signature dose of hard brass to every audience on the 4 month international tour and earned a spot backing up Prince at the New Power Generation Fest in Denmark the next year, coming personally requested by The Artist himself. Since then HBE has grown into an even newer sound with their latest efforts “Bullet Proof Brass” & “FLY” released by their very own imprint PHEELCO ENTERTAINMENT.
