Hot Chip have announced a new run of headline dates in the UK for October including Manchester and Leeds. Tickets for all dates go on pre-sale at 10am Wednesday 22nd April and on general sale at 10am Friday 24th April. Ryedale Festival

Two weeks of performances in venues in and around Ryedale, North Yorkshire.

There’s a Hungarian flavour to the programme, with a complete cycle of Bartók’s string quartets alongside an equally great set by Haydn, a new production of Lehár’s The Merry Widow, and a celebration of Brahms’s Hungarian-inspired works.

A performance of Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil in Ampleforth Abbey introduces a parallel theme of ‘night music’, including a complete cycle of Chopin’s Nocturnes over three candlelit concerts and night-inspired works by Bartók, Schoenberg, Mozart, Tallis, Byrd, Britten and others.

Chamber music is at the heart of the programme, with festival residences from the Heath and Doric Quartets, and the Lendvai Trio.

Orchestral highlights include the Orchestra of Opera North playing Mahler and the Royal Northern Sinfonia performing at Hovingham Hall, while the Dunedin Consort bring an all-Bach programme to Scarborough and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra promises an unmissable evening in Malton. Vocal highlights include performances by top choirs Ex Cathedra and Stile Antico, while a new English version of one of Schubert’s greatest song cycles is heard for the first time in Helmsley.

Eleven new works (nine world premieres, two English premieres), including two by festival composer Michael Berkeley. To complete the picture, there is the unique Triple Concert at Castle Howard and Double Concerts at Sledmere, a series of literary events Ways with Words, a festival exhibition, a series of free festival workshops for young and amateur musicians, and a new initiative Ryedale500 to help more young people explore the festival.

York Early Music Festival

The 2015 York Early Music Festival celebrates 300 years of music making across England and France – from the battle of Agincourt in 1415 commemorated by The Clerks in the Quire of York Minster – to the fabulous wealth and opulence of the Court of Louis XIV who died in 1715 and whose music and dance is celebrated by the London Handel Players with baroque specialists Mary Collins and Steven Player in the Lyons Concert Hall at the University of York.

The Early Opera Company led by Christian Curnyn singing Purcell and Charpentier

Halifax Symphony Orchestra

132 years old, the Halifax Symphony Orchestra is one of the UK’s oldest non-professional orchestras. Members come from all walks of life from within and around Calderdale and beyond, and share a passion for playing together. The players are variously teachers, semi-professionals, and retired professionals along with a positive group of dedicated amateurs.

Conductor – Nicholas Simpson

Nick was born in Manchester.

He read law at Nottingham University, and for ten years played in rock bands, making a small but still faintly detectable impact on 1980s pop, before studying composition and conducting at Trinity College of Music in London.

At Trinity he had lessons with John Tavener, winning the Chappell Prize for composition and the Ricordi Prize for conducting (twice). In 1987 he was a finalist in the national Yehudi Menhuin and Royal Overseas League competitions, and whilst still a student his first string quartet was given by the Roth Quartet at the Purcell Room.

In the 1990s Nick earned a living as a criminal lawyer, composing in his spare time, but resigned to concentrate on music upon moving back to Manchester in 1998. His music has been played by artists as diverse as the Composers’ Ensemble, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English String Quartet, both in Europe and the USA. He has written music in a wide variety of genres, including two symphonies and many chamber pieces, and is one of a small (and undistinguished) number of people whose work has been played both on Radio 1 and Radio 3.

In 2003 he began an association with the award-winning Sound Inventors composition in education team, leading further courses in 2005. He has twice been nominated for the British Composer Awards, most recently for his oratorio Recreation, completed in 2004 whilst Composer in Residence with Sale Choral Society. His Symphony No.2 was recorded by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2005 and broadcast on Radio 3 last summer. His new piece for the Fell Clarinet Quartet, Mardale Changes, received its premiere at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester in December, and he is now working on a third Symphony.

In addition to his work with the Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Nick Simpson is Music Director of the Gorton Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester. He is married and has three children. In idle moments he plays guitar in the R&B band Los Galacticos.

Orchestra of Square Chapel: A Night at the Opera

Orchestra of Square Chapel is the resident orchestra at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Halifax. A mixture of professional, semi-professional and gifted amateur players, the orchestra has a reputation for exciting programming. Concerts feature the very best music for chamber orchestra and offer an alternative musical palette to other local orchestras. This concert will be conducted by Nick Concannon-Hodges.

Orchestra of Square Chapel has been heard on BBC Radio 3 as part of the Listen Up Festival of British and Contemporary Composers and has performed as part of the Halifax Festival.

Sarah Killian

The soprano soloist Sarah Killian will be performing in this concert, which will feature music by Verdi, Puccini, Bernstein and Wagner.

Sarah grew up in Halifax, West Yorkshire and was involved in music from an early age.

In 2008, Sarah went to Royal Holloway University to read Music. She was lucky enough to perform lead roles such as Adele (Die Fledermaus) and Aline (The Sorcerer) with the Savoy Opera Society and Countess Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro) with Opera Holloway. In her final year she was awarded the composition prize and graduated with First Class hons.

Since University she has studied on Birkbeck’s Opera course and is currently on the postgraduate course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Whilst at Guildhall Sarah has had many opportunities, performing in the operas, The Adventures of Pinnochio by Jonathan Dove and Dvořák’s The Cunning Peasant. She played Naijade in a scene from Strauss’s Ariadne Auf Naxos and Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen. Last year she was invited to sing Maconchy’s song cycle Sun, Moon and Stars for Jane Manning’s Birthday Celebration at the City of London Festival.

Conductor – Nick Concannon-Hodges

Since taking over the Todmorden Orchestra at the start of the 2006/7 season, Nick has established himself as a highly successful and respected conductor in the West Pennines.

Between 2007 and 2012 he worked with the Burnley Municipal Orchestra and Chorus and most recently, he has been engaged as a Guest Conductor with the Orchestra of Square Chapel, Halifax. In 2009 Nick became the Musical Director of the Congleton Choral Society, a post he held until 2011, and he was also invited to conduct the Pennine Spring Music Festival Orchestra. He was subsequently made Musical Director of the Festival in 2011. Challenging performers to excel and perform at their best through supportive, enjoyable and rewarding rehearsals is a fundamental part of Nick’s work.

REVIEW: Martin Chung – ‘Nimbus’ EP

Nimbus is the debut solo recording from talented jazz guitarist, Martin Chung. The instrumental EP began life six months ago, as a part of Martin’s final year project for his Music Technology degree at the University of Huddersfield, and grew from there into a chance to finally achieve his personal goal – to record and release his own music.

The six songs featured on the EP mix jazz-fusion with electronica, with Martin’s virtuoso playing backed by programmed beats and synths. The music ranges from the slower paced ambient soundscapes of opener Soujourn and Baytown, to the more up-beat, rhythm-driven tracks such as the title song and Toys In The Attic where skittish, jazzy drum ‘n’ bass beats dance around Martin’s impressive guitar improvisations.

The stand-out track on the album is the closer, Towards The East, which adds some atmospheric rain-soaked piano to the mix along with a brass section featuring the combined talents of Amanda Spalding and Nick Batty from funk group The Nu-Popes. The resulting sound is strongly reminiscent of fellow UK jazz instrumentalists, The Cinematic Orchestra, who Martin cites as an influence on his music.

Martin claims the inspiration for both the EP’s music and its evocative artwork was the landscape around his home in Huddersfield. ‘There’s a powerful, dark beauty to the countryside here,’ he says. ‘It’s incredibly dramatic whether it’s raining, snowing or blazing sunshine. I wanted to capture some of this both in the music and how it was presented visually.’

Tor Ist Das! Festival is a special one off music event that takes part in Tormorden, West Yorkshire inviting artists experimenting in psychedelic, improv., sound art, folk and even metal to play. We aim to bring artists to the town who would likely never play outside of large UK cities (and in the case of our headliner, never play anywhere ever before) and mix them with local artists on the lineup.

About the organisers

Tor Bookings put on shows throughout the year using a community run church and the festival celebrates the anniversary of the first event. ‘Was Ist Das?’ is a Hebden Bridge organisation that combines journalism, broadcasting, a record label and promoting. The festival is their farewell before relocating to Arizona to bring experimental music to the desert.

Andrew Liles & Maniac

Andrew Liles is a prolific solo artist, producer, remixer and sometime member of Nurse With Wound and Current 93. He has been recording since the mid 1980’s and has appeared on well over 200 releases.

Laura Cannell

Playing fiddle, overbowed fiddle, double recorders, sometimes percussion and other rarefied wind instruments, Laura is a young woman drawing on ancient transcendental and earthly musics. Her sense of space, dynamics and working with acoustics is super sensitive. Whether solo or otherwise she explores the spaces between ancient, traditional and improvised music, often utilising a fragment from a medieval theme to her own end in a manner that embraces the apparitional, historical or the otherworldly. Her seemingly wild side, in such rarefied circles makes her involved yet emotive music really bristle and connect.

Bird People

Bird People is a predominantly acoustic free drone project started by Ulrich Rois in 2010. As of 2015, Bird People operate as a fluid collective comprising between two and six players. Under his own name, Rois plays solo clawhammer banjo and various forms of minimal extended tone music.

Lutine

Lutine (Heather Minor and Emma Morton) are already establishing themselves are a mesmerising live act, combining haunting vocal harmonies with minimal, delicate instrumentation on a mixture of original songs and traditional folk songs. They translated their minimal, fragile and evocative sound onto record for the first time on their debut album White Flowers, released September 2014, from which tracks have been played by Lauren Laverne and Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music. Their debut single Sallow Tree featured on Lauren Laverne’s music playlist, and they recently appeared live in session for BBC Introducing South.

Isnaj Dui

Standing awkwardly between neo-impressionism and electronica, Isnaj Dui (aka Katie English) conveys a minimal yet capturing sound using flutes, home-made dulcimers and electronics. As a classically trained flautist, English has also studied electroacoustic music, alternative tunings and Balinese gamelan and has collaborated with numerous artists from electronica acts to folk bands.
