SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Soeur release ‘No Show’, dates March 2019

0

After an exciting 2018 with the success of their second EP ‘ Fight’ , Bristol grunge-pop trio Sœur are storming into 2019 with a brand new single “ No Show ” released on the 4th March, premiered by Radio 1 Rock Show’s Daniel P. Carter on 3rd March. The band will be heading out on a full UK headline tour to promote their latest offering.

Adding new layers of sound to their thick grunge guitars, the new single shares the band’s passion for melodic riffs, rhythmic precision and addictive dual vocals.

“No Show is about depression,” explains guitarist/vocalist Anya, “it depicts the hopelessness of trying to communicate and the futility of attempting to function or to show up for what life demands of you.” Guitarist/vocalist Tina has a different view “For me, ‘No Show’ is about the different expectations people have of life; theirs and other people’s. Sometimes we find purpose and meaning in the places we’d least expect, but we have to show up to find it.”.

The band toured relentlessly in winter 2018, selling out shows across the country and are excited to be back out on the road in March. “We love touring,” says
guitarist/vocalist Anya, “I’ve always felt like being on stage is the place where I get to be truly and completely myself, it’s both exhilarating and cathartic and I’m not sure there’s anything in the world I enjoy doing more.”

Recorded by Jamie Ward at Seamus Wong studios in Leicester & Silk Mill Studios in Stoke, “ No Show ” sees the band expanding their sonic palette with a more focused & defined sound that captures their natural live performance.

“ We were actually halfway through touring ‘ Fight’ when we headed in to the studio to record our next batch of songs, it was all quite intense, touring one release whilst recording the next but we’re really happy with the results! ” says drummer James.

With the success of the 2018 under their belts the band are keen to keep their loyal fans engaged with a string of singles set to be released throughout the spring and summer months.

“We’ve got a fair few festivals already booked in and they keep on coming so it looks like it’ll be a busy summer for us!”

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: Sundara Karma intimate gig at Crash Records Leeds, ‘Ulfilas’ out now, other gig dates April 2019 on

0

Sundara Karma’s acclaimed album Ulfilas’ Alphabet is out now on Chess Club / RCA. The Reading band’s second album continues to see them break new ground artistically, with the ambitious album covering epic stadium ready art pop anthems (‘One Last Night On This Earth’), stuttering New Wave funk (‘Little Smart Houses’), stripped back Scott walker esque soul searching (‘The Changeover’) and full on four on the floor dance floor bangers (‘Higher States’). There is a bold, hugely ambitious metamorphosis at the heart of Sundara Karma’s second album.

The band take to the road this April on a nationwide tour, including a night at London’s Brixton Academy (13th April) and sold out shows at Nottingham Rock City and Glasgow Barrowlands shows. They will be celebrating the release of Ulfilas’ Alphabet with in-store live shows at Rough Trade Bristol (3rd March), Rough Trade Nottingham (4th March), Crash Leeds (6th March) and Rough Trade East London (7th March).

Despite being only in their early 20’s, the Reading four piece have been together for close to 10 years. A steady rise came to a head with the their 2017 debut LP ‘Youth is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect’, which saw them headline a sold-out Brixton Academy and draw one of the weekend’s biggest crowds on the Second Stage at Reading Festival, with scores of latecomers forced to listen from outside. Ulfilas’ Alphabet, produced by Stuart Price (Madonna, The Killers, New Order, Pet Shop Boys) and Kaines (a.k.a. Alex Robertshaw from Everything Everything), sees Sundara Karma throw off all creative shackles and stake their claim as one of the most exciting bands to emerge in recent years.

TOUR & SINGLE NEWS: The Murder Capital announce April/May 2019 dates, debut single ‘Feeling Fades’ out now on Human Season Records

0

After selling out numerous UK dates before any studio material was even available online, Dublin’s The Murder Capital today announce a further string of dates for April and May that include dates at The Great Escape, a London headliner at The Lexington and a homecoming show at Whelan’s in Dublin for Eastbound Festival.

Catch the band live on the following dates:

30th April – The Forum – Tunbridge Wells
1st May – Picture House Social Club – Sheffield
3rd May – Soup Kitchen – Manchester
4th May – Live At Leeds – Leeds
5th May – Handmade Festival – Leicester
8th May – The Jericho Tavern – Oxford
10th May – The Great Escape – Brighton
11th May – Eastbound Festival, Whelan’s – Dublin
14th May – Nice N Sleazy – Glasgow
15th May – The Polar Bear – Hull
16th May – The Lexington – London

They will also support IDLES at the band’s sold out show at The Electric Ballroom on 6th April.

The Murder Capital ended 2018 as that rare thing: a band tipped from all corners without having released a single song. In an age where people and bands overshare by default, The Murder Capital have been doing the opposite. If you wanted to know about The Murder Capital, you had to get to a show and see for yourself. That’s if you could get in. Based on the caustic strength of one live recording of “More Is Less”, which went viral on YouTube (watch), and feverish word of mouth from those who have been lucky enough to attend these early gigs, The Murder Capital have built a formidable reputation. In just over a year, they’ve sold out shows in their hometown of Dublin (to 400 people), played with Slaves, Shame and fellow countrymen Fontaines DC and seen the likes of the NME, Loud & Quiet, Dork and DIY back them already – with The Irish Times calling them out as Ireland’s best new rock band.

With debut single “Feeling Fades” the band fulfill their early promise – delivering a brooding, propulsive slice of post-punk recorded with Flood (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Foals). In one of their rare interviews so far, the band have stated they are driven by the genuine desire to affect cultural change, and when front-man James McGovern repeats the lyric “the now elapsed ‘round you and me, and it kept us all together” on this, their debut single, you start to believe that they’re capable of achieving just that.

American rock superstars – LIVING COLOUR – will perform their classic album ‘Vivid’ live and in-full at a handful of UK dates in 2019.

Over 30 years since its initial release, the maverick New York City outfit will be revisiting their infamous debut record end-to-end on stages across the country, plus a smattering of hits from their establishment-quaking career.

Full dates and details outlined below, with tickets on sale today 1st March 2019:

Released by Epic Records in 1988, this game-changing release boasted totemic singles including “Cult of Personality”, “Open Letter (To A Landlord)”, “Funny Vibe”, “Middle Man” and “Glamour Boys” amongst its many riches. Produced by enlisted super-producer Ed Stasium (Ramones / Talking Heads), this seismic first effort was also notable for its guest appearances from none other than Chuck D, Flavour Flav and even one Mick Jagger (who also contributed to production on select tracks).

Released to a shower of rave reviews from the rock press including a mighty 4.5/5 in Kerrang! and global public adoration, ‘Vivid’ was an instant success, hitting the No.6 spot in the Billboard 200 Chart and earning certifiable Double Platinum status after it comfortably became one of the most popular albums of the year.

Decades later, the ‘Vivid’ legacy remains untarnished and intact, with the record even receiving prestigious inclusion in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book. With its seminal status unquestionable and its inspiring musical, political and social relevance more prescient than ever, in 2019, the original maestros behind this groundbreaking work will return to perform the album live and in full like never before.

Providing fittingly anarchic company on their upcoming ‘Vivid’ performances, Living Colour will joined for the dates by one of the UK’s most unflinchingly exciting new rock talents Wayward Sons, plus explosive US blues-rocker Jared James Nichols. For more than thirty years Living Colour have created, recorded and performed their own brand of heavy rock that draws as much inspiration from yesteryear soul men and rock gods as they do from post-bop jazz and boulevard shaking hip-hop. Founded by guitarist Vernon Reid back when he was still a dreadlocked sideman with Ronald Shannon Jackson and other East Village noise ensembles, Living Colour includes vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish.

In 2017, Living Colour released their latest studio album, ‘Shade,’ on Megaforce Records, a record that stood as their first new record in some eight years.

Still performing with the original and complete line up, in 2019 Living Colour will return their iconic debut album ‘Vivid’ to the masses at what promise to be some of 2019 most thrilling live shows. Be there…

GIG NEWS: inFade play Temple of Boom Leeds 9th March alongside Amongst Thieves & Counterpoint

0

inFade – who I recently caught at The Purple Thread gig at The Lending Room, see my review – are playing at The Temple of Boom Leeds next Saturday 9th March.

Just so you don’t have to duck out of this news piece – although do if you want to read about the other bands playing – here’s what I said:

“inFade start as they mean to go on. Their music is loud – no way way loud, heavy on the riff and thankfully free of any guitar heroics (I’ve kinda gone off guitar solos in heavy alternative music lately, I live for a riff!). They hover around that sort of heavy alternative rock, grunge-y riffing, almost metal thing BUT – and it’s a big but – their stuff isn’t same-y. At no point do I think ‘well, this is just all sounding the same’.

inFade

Their third track is a slower number, a slow burner that has both a tune and groove. It was at this point that I really got into inFade. I also really took notice of the fact that this is band who really get into it, it’s not a ‘stage act’ but it’s visually exciting, they hardly ever stay in the one spot or just stand there, they’re all over the stage.

Stuff like this, that relies on three people locking into something, isn’t going to work if they don’t know what they’re doing musically, and inFade can play, they play really brilliantly well.

The other standout song in their set was a new song that had a kinda almost blusey feel to it, a blues rock thing going on. This had of all things a guitar solo, it was short and at the very end of the song but it was a solo, but in the context of the song it worked for them to sneak one in.

inFade really impressed me”

Basically what I’m saying is inFade are really worth catching.

Amongst Thieves + Counterpoint

Originating from free party roots, over its fourteenth-year history, Beat-Herder has become known as one of the last-remaining, independent bastions of electronic music, featuring drum & bass, psytrance, techno, and house music. Renowned for uniting disparate subcultures, this year’s line-up reads as a celebration of electronic music in its many forms.

Headlining the main stage this year are the dominating Drum & Bass sounds of widely successful British 4-piece, Rudimental; alongside celebrated dance music pioneers Groove Armada, whose 15 year career has been marked by huge singles ‘Superstylin’ and ‘I See You Baby’ and phenomenal worldwide success. They’re joined by dance legends Basement Jaxx (DJ set), who rose from underground house music sensations to chart-topping, BRIT-award winners, with huge dance floor-pleasers ‘Romeo’, ‘Where’s Your Head At?’ and ‘Do Your Thing’.

Seminal hip-hop group The SugarHill Gang & Melle Mel & Scorpio Furious Five also join the party at the main stage, alongside eclectic, extraterrestrial beat-makers Henge; 14-piece live spectacle Dutty Moonshine Big Band; and local favourites The Lancashire Hotpots. The hugely popular electronic band Dub Pistols have been tearing up festival stages for 20 years; and Opiuo will be bringing his ghetto-funk live show to the Ribble Valley, amongst many more to be announced.

Confirmed for the Toil Trees stage, a majestic woodland setting and the beating heart of Beat-Herder, revellers can expect the bass-orientated, garage-influenced sounds of DJ/producer Hannah Wants; a dubstep pioneer and one of the UK’s best loved selectors Skream; and Australian upstart Sonny Fodera, who is best known for his technical wizardry on the decks. Joining them are Solid Grooves label boss Michael Bibi; DJ Mag’s breakthrough producer Latmun; Swedish DJ/producer and Power Plant Records label honcho La Fleur; and prolific producer Purple Disco Machine, whose massive hit ‘Dished (Male Stripper)’ had everyone dancing all Summer long in 2018; all set to grace this legendary stage.

The aptly named Fortress, a monstrous construction of corrugated iron, is the refuge of Beat-Herder’s most hardcore revellers. Featuring fire-spewing turrets, the Fortress will host Metalheadz maestro Benny L; Rinse FM DJ Chris Lorenzo, pioneering ‘House & Bass’ sounds straight out of his hometown of Birmingham; real-life brother duo Phibes known for their high-powered, energetic live sets and party mixes; and Brazilian producer/DJ and Hospital Recs’ S.P.Y, amongst others.

Reflecting the Ribble Valley’s mystic heritage, The Ring pays homage to John Pratt – a mysterious local enigma who was said to possess the strength of ten men. A 100 foot diameter earth mound accessed via a huge Stonehenge-style entrance, it is the perfect venue to capture the original stadium house innovators, and venue hosts, Utah Saints, whose sampling of everything from Eurythmics to Kate Bush made them one of the genre’s earliest crossover sensations. The very impressive, innovative D&B DJ Macky Gee will take to the decks with a heavy dose of bass; as well as Hospital Records’ DJ Metrik who will be bringing his high-end D&B production to rock The Ring. Combining tight beats and earth-quaking baselines, DJ Hazard also joins the party, alongside multi-instrumentalist, DJ and singer Official Nancie, and the Annie Mac-tipped Leeds duo Prospa.

The Factory is a split-level arena in which you can clock in, but never clock out. Looking a little like Studio 54 transported 40 years into the future and 3500 miles east, this year it hosts The Showhawk Duo, the celebrated guitarists break convention, blurring the lines between acoustics and electronic music. The Shodigy take to the floor with their retro dance party – expect a 90’s extravaganza! While unconventional post-punk supergroup, Warmduscher, whose members include The Fat White Family, Paranoid London and The Moonlandingz, inject the rock n roll and a wildly-acclaimed energetic show; sample king DJ Yoda will be bringing his famous turntables and live AV-spectacular show to life.

Music is just part of the experience at Beat-Herder. Entirely handmade from scratch, the stages stand out as something truly different in the increasingly identikit festival landscape. That attention to detail creates an immersive world full of beguiling and intriguing creative concepts. Which other festivals give you the opportunity to explore underground tunnels, dance to drum and bass in a chapel or get inked in the functioning tattoo parlour? And if the hedonism gets a little too much, guests can slow the pace by lounging in the heated hidden swimming pool, sitting by the huge fire in the stone circle or enjoy some retro entertainment at the site’s very own working men’s club.

Beat-Herder continues to exist as it did back when it started as a free DIY party in 1998: uncompromising, unwavering and distinguished by an overwhelming sense of community. Its reputation as one of the friendliest festivals around can be attributed to its loyal followers – friends, couples and families who create new memories to cherish in a bold and barmy atmosphere each summer.

Tier 1 and 2 tickets have sold out. Tier 3 tickets are now available for £150.00 plus booking fee from https://tickets.beatherder.co.uk/. Tickets can also be purchased via monthly or 15-week payment plans. Glamping options are also available. The Beat-Herder Bombassador programme is also open, allowing loyal fans the chance to get free tickets and money-can’t-buy experiences.

SINGLE REVIEW: Courtyards – ‘Colours’

0

Indie does really come in a huge range of flavours. Courtyards’ take, at least on this single, is mostly bloody loud, it’s bloody raucous and dirty. It kinda edges into garage, it’s that raw. But it has that soaring indie thing going on, it’s there, it’s beneath the surface of the thing, but it’s there. It’s in the quieter bits that are just so lovely, that’s the only way of describing them.

But listen closely and you realise that this is a band that know how to play, they meld the quieter fluid sections into the louder, dirtier, raw bits with what I can only describe as consummate skill. And I have developed a particular thing about the vocals on this track – they are kinda punky in the loud sections and really smooth and pure in the quieter sections.

About the only criticism I can put my finger on is that it’s too short, it thrills you for 2 minutes 46 seconds and then it’s gone. The only solution is to put it on repeat. This is just wonderful.

The info

Courtyards’ sound is drenched in a wall of dirty, reverb-soaked indie rock centered around delivering consistent euphoric hooks and creating an immersive atmosphere. Their diverse tracks range from brooding basslines and lustrous vocals to epic guitar anthems fused with summer melancholy.

The 4-piece hail from Greater Manchester, Cumbria & Darlington but met at university in Huddersfield.

Courtyards have consistently received extensive support from BBC Introducing with each release since their debut in 2016, and latest 2018’s single ‘Backseat’ proved no different, with multiple plays from BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio alike.

With appearances in 2018 at Live at Leeds, Blackthorn & the Alternative Escape festivals, Courtyards continued to have an electric summer touring up & down the country, impressing crowds and proving they are “ready for the step to festival main stages” – The Emergence.

SINGLE REVIEW: TAMSYN – ‘Forever Is Now

0

So now that I seem to have embraced big rousing indie tunes, TAMSYN’s ‘Forever Is Now’ really hits the spot. It’s a big, no bloody huge, guitar driven indie song.

It has this wonderful nagging guitar riff that drives through the song. But the thing I really love about the song is the vocals – they’re just wonderfully… let’s say, hazy and floaty, with a hint of The Associates. I also have a bit of thing about the start of the song which opens with of all things an organ. But most of all I love that it doesn’t let up, it just sits there at raging the whole way through.

And the playing on this thing is great, the guitar has just the right amount of rawness, the drums are uncomplicated and just right for the track.

This a short and sweet review, just play it people, the louder the better.
