SINGLE & TOUR NEWS: Grandaddy share ‘Evermore’, March/April 2017 tour dates

0

After Grandaddy broke up in 2006, Jason Lytle relocated to Montana, where he happily made two solo albums, and reconnected with the natural world around him. Eventually, though, life uprooted him again, taking him to Portland, Oregon until he eventually returned to his former home of Modesto, California. The return to California was practical (he needed to be near his bandmates) but also appropriate: he had started writing songs that he felt would be fitting for another Grandaddy album. The result, ‘Last Place’, is a perfect addition to the band’s celebrated, critically-acclaimed catalogue, that includes their breakthrough sophomore album, ‘Sophtware Slump’, and their debut, ‘Under the Western Freeway’. It’s a symphonic swirl of lo-fi sonics and mile-high harmonies, found sounds and electronics-gone-awry mingling with perfect, power pop guitar tones. Lytle’s voice sounds as warm and intimate as ever, giving graceful levity to the doomsday narratives that have dominated the Grandaddy output.

EP & TOUR NEWS: Lonely The Brave new EP out 17th March 2017, tour supporting Mallory Knox

0

After a great 2016 for the band that included a no.1 album on the rock chart, a sell-out headline tour and a hugely successful European tour in support of Biffy Clyro, Lonely The Brave continue their prolific streak as songwriters by announcing a brand new EP (pre-order HERE), led by album highlight, the atmospheric and emotive ‘Diamond Days’. The EP features two other non-album tracks, including the immediate, melodic ‘Collider’ , and a cover of The Walkmen’s iconic ‘The Rat’. A band known for picking covers that perhaps people wouldn’t expect from them – Cyndi Lauper, Bjork, Pink Floyd and Antony & The Johnsons some of their previous conquests – ‘The Rat’ is a leftfield take on an already wonderful song, one that showcases David Jakes’ peerless vocals and one that will hopefully introduce the song to a whole new audience.

Alongside the new EP, coming March 17th through Hassle Records, Lonely The Brave will be supporting British alt-rockers Mallory Knox on their UK tour spanning March and April 2017, featuring dates in Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Bristol and both Mallory Knox and the band’s hometown of Cambridge.

Known for their uplifting, atmospheric and anthemic songs, the band are joined on the line-up by their old friends and tour partners, the Glasgow three-piece, Fatherson.

VIDEO NEWS: York band INVISIONS drop video for ‘Turn Up’

0

Merging the cardiac arrest-inducing pulse of modern Metalcore with full throttled, old school Thrash-tinged riffs, INVISIONS are a ticking time bomb set to take the UK by storm. Today they reveal new video TURN UP, following its radio debut on Kerrang! Radio on Wednesday 25th January. The video captures the York based 5-piece’s debaucherous and unhinged energy, and is a taster of things to come.

“‘Turn up’ in our eyes is a hard hitting, energetic and an incredibly real song which we all felt represents InVisions musically. We also honestly love to party, probably a little more than we should, but what’s life without fun? This song covers every aspect of this. The video location was shot in an underground nightclub to really depict that atmosphere of a mad night out. It’s a perfect representation of what we’re about.”
– Josh Hardy (Drums)

Whilst INVISIONS party spirit is undeniable, they are by no means simply here for the joyride. Each member has done the hard graft with roots in the York music scene from previous bands, and the demise of these projects led to the formation of INVISIONS in early 2016. Regardless of their mixed musical background, there was a clear collective vision to create hard hitting, adrenaline-fuelled, heavy music. Immediately jumping in at the deep end, the band hit the rehearsal room to craft the foundation for their sound. Now armed with a trophy cabinet of songs to unleash on an unsuspecting world, INVISIONS will release their debut album soon.

“What sets us apart, is that every single word is real. You can’t pretend to be an outcast, you can’t pretend to have an addictive personality and you can’t pretend to be so pissed off at the world. There’s absolutely no bullshit. The lyric writing process was a huge outlet for us and I’m sure that people are going to relate to these songs like we still do, even listening back months later.”
– Alex Scott (Guitars)

Catch INVISIONS on the road:

17 Feb – WORTHING Forty Two
19 Ferb – PETERBOROUGH Met Lounge
8th Apr – WORKINGTON Lounge 41
20th Apr- PORTSMOUTH Old Barn
18th May – BIRMINGHAM Subside
3rd June – BOLTON Seddfest

Alex Scott – Guitars

VIDEO NEWS: Pulled Apart By Horses reveal new music video for ‘Hotel Motivation’

0

Pulled Apart By Horses have revealed a new music video for ‘Hotel Motivation’, the latest noise-pop anthem to be revealed from their forthcoming album, ‘The Haze’, due for release March 17th via Caroline International.

Following snarling title track ‘The Haze’, and “instant mosh-pit maker” (NME) ‘The Big What If’, ‘Hotel Motivation’ arrives inspired by a mind-scrambling combination of insomnia and Iggy Pop’s discography playing back to back at full volume.

“Welcome to the Hotel Motivation”, guitarist James Brown explains, “this foot stomper came to life from a shared love of Iggy Pop and an overwhelming lack of sleep when Tom was up night and day penning song lyrics. We hope you enjoy your stay!”

“Ironically these lyrics came out of the frustration of me suffering a little ‘writers block’,” vocalist / guitarist Tom Hudson adds. “I was sat in a small room in my house, hunched over my computer recording my vocals at about three in the morning. I felt like I couldn’t allow myself to sleep until I’d at least made some progress with the track. The song is sort of a fictional version of how I felt and what I was doing that night. A couple of days later we played it in our practice room and everything felt right.”

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Vukovi announce debut album, due for release March 10th, UK headline tour dates announced for March

0

Frantic and explosive, the new music video for lead single and album opener ‘La Di Da’ erupts into a snake-infested frenzy in seconds. “I wanted the video for ‘La Di Da’ to be a representation of my subconscious”, frontwoman Janie Shilstone says. “Almost like watching what a satanic, schizophrenic nightmare would look like.”

“At first I was terrified and when David, the owner, turned up with this see-through box. I totally froze when I saw her, though David assured me that she’d never bit or tried to strangle anyone before!

Her name was Honey, a 6ft Boa Constrictor, and after 20 mins of stroking her I finally plucked up the courage to hold her. I completely fell in love. She slithered down my left arm and rested her head on my hand, it was so therapeutic. There was one shot where I lay down and got her to slither along my body and she beautifully went behind my ear and then up towards the camera.”

Partly inspired by the Joker and Harley Quinn (from Batman) relationship Janine was obsessed with as a comic book loving teen, “the song portrays an abusive relationship unbeknown to the victim,” says the singer. “There are a lot of emotions throughout the song. There’s vulnerability, and there’s resistance. It took time to come together, and it had to live on the back burner for a while. But one night I gave in to the niggling that kept demanding I go back to it. I remember the moment it came together; me and Hamish (Reilly, guitars) in my flat drinking pretentious cocktails, laptop, tiny amp, guitar…” Incessantly giddy, intoxicatingly catchy; the end result more than rewards the toil.

Vukovi’s self-titled debut album is the definitive snapshot of their Technicolor wonder to date. They demand your attention. Produced by longtime collaborator Bruce Rintoul – “nobody pushes me quite like Bruce” says Janine – its twelve songs take in themes of individuality, drug abuse, depression and suicide. “The record might sound quirky,” says Janine. “But there are many darker notes in there…”

Tracks like ‘Prey’ see Shilstone digging deep into personal experience (“it’s about a time in my life where I thought I’d met my knight in shining armor – but he fucked me up even more) and the sublime ‘I’m Wired’, Janine’s favourite song on the record (“I wrote it trying to describe being in a relationship with severe depression and trying to express that you need that person even though you don’t show it most of the time”).

There’s introspection here, yes. There’s beauty, sure. But there are songs like ‘And He Lost His Mind’ too, which is as fun as rock music has ever allowed itself to be. A big, bouncy, neon daubed earworm that bores itself into your brain and gobbles up on your serotonin. Then there’s ‘Boy George’, a former single with a guitar sliced through it like a chainsaw through a piñata. And, if you’re going to call a song ‘Bouncy Castle’, chances are that it’s not going to be an acoustic weepy. Vukovi truly excel here, coming on like Paramore span around and around and around until they’re very dizzy and just about ready to hurl up something… wonderful.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Dreadzone’s new album ‘Dread Times’ released in February, tour dates announced

0

Entering an impressive 3rd decade, Dreadzone, one of the most energetic, exciting and powerful live bands to emerge from the post-rave scene, release a brand new album ‘Dread Times’ on February 17th 2017.

‘Dread Times’ is the band’s 8th studio album and the 3rd release on their own “Dubwiser” label. Their old skool dread sound comes bubbling to the surface on this album and it digs deeper into their dub and reggae roots whilst still keeping the beats fresh and the textures electronic. Conscious lyrics, social ills, matters of the heart and mind merge with 21st century dubwise flavours. The album is an eclectic rolling journey that recalls elements from an illustrious 23 year history while always looking ahead to the next phase.

Alongside core members Greg Dread, who produced this 12 track album, Leo Williams, Chris Compton, reggae vocalist Earl 16 and MC Spee, Dread Times introduces younger blood into the mix with newest member Bazil bringing an edge to the sonic process and Greg’s son Marlon expanding the musical range further. Don Letts also returns with lyrical contributions, as does Lena Cullen on vocals for one track, with 90s ragga duo Louchie Lou and Michie One guesting on another. Recorded again at Mick Jones’ Bunker Studio, arranged at Dread Central and mixed by fellow founder Tim Bran, this is classic West London Zone with an updated edge. Dread music for an unpredictable world, these are Dread Times.

Pioneered by former members of Big Audio Dynamite (and, by inheritance, carrying forward the heart and soul of The Clash) Dreadzone’s two decade plus career has been championed by the late John Peel, signed to the legendary Creation Records and Virgin before finally securing their independence by founding their own aforementioned Dubwiser record label.

Since their inception in 1993 Dreadzone have steadily been releasing underground storms of albums, progressively bettering, refining and perfecting their own unique and inimitable take on dub – mixed as it is with aspects of dance, sublime guitar riffs, folk roots sentiments and breakbeat bass styles – whilst bringing the party to every club, dancehall and field they’ve shown up at. Always blowing audiences away and steadily earning for themselves the best possible reputation as a live act in the process.

ALBUM NEWS: Ray Davies ‘Americana’ out April 21st 2017

0

‘Americana’ was written, conceived, and arranged, by Davies, and co-produced with Guy Massey and John Jackson. The album is an autobiographical work, chronicling the inextricable role America has played in Davies’ life. From his earliest days touring the U.S. with the Kinks and subsequent blacklisting by the American Musicians Union, to his years playing stadiums and eventually staying in New York and New Orleans for a time, America has served as both muse and tempest to Davies.

The songs on ‘Americana’ dig into the rich American musical tapestry, through the lens of Davies’ own wholly unique American experience. The music swerves from the open-road manifesto of “The Great Highway,” to a delicate duet with The Jayhawks’ Karan Grotberg on “Message From The Road, A Place In Your Heart,” to “Poetry,” which offers a vital reminder of Davies’ ability to spin small detail into penetrating truth. The album also features a number of short spoken-word passages from Davies’ memoir. A second volume of ‘Americana’ will be released later in 2017.Since the release of his last studio album of new material, 2008’s ‘Working Man’s Café,’ Ray Davies released the 2010 collaborative project ‘See My Friends,’ which featured Bruce Springsteen, Mumford & Sons, Metallica and Spoon; performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics; served as inspiration, the original story plus music and lyrics and provided all the music for the hit UK musical ‘Sunny Afternoon’ (winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Musical) and much more.

At the beginning of 2017 Davies topped Queen Elizabeth’s New Year Honours List, and will shortly be receiving a knighthood for his service to the arts. Davies is a member of both the Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame and Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Fame. Five albums by The Kinks were chosen for Rolling Stone’s ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time’ list.

‘Americana’ tracklisting:
1. Americana
2. The Deal
3. Poetry
4. Message From The Road
5. A Place In Your Heart
6. The Mystery Room
7. Silent Movie
8. Rock ‘N’ Roll Cowboys
