GIG NEWS: Chameleons Vox Home Is Where The Heart Is … 2016

0

Back by overwhelming popular demand, CHAMELEONS VOX are delighted to reveal they will be returning to the hallowed halls of the Manchester Academy for their third annual hometown celebration.

Now becoming something of a yearly tradition for the cult Mancunian band and their devoted fan base, the third annual instalment follows rapturously received former years in residence at the venue.

The Home Is Where The Heart Is series has seen the Chameleons Vox mastermind Mark Burgess unearth forgotten gems and glittering rarities from the band’s coveted back catalogue for these utterly unique annual shows; 2016’s celebrations will be no exception.

Promising a cathartic exploration through the band’s back catalogue, fans can expect a joyous appraisal that highlights the very best of all four of The Chameleons seminal studio albums, delving deep into the ‘Script of The Bridge’ (1983), ‘What Does Anything Mean? Basically’ (1985), ‘Strange Times’ (1986) and ‘Why Call It Anything’ (2001) for this exclusive gig.

Speaking about this year’s proceedings, Mark Burgess said: “Well it’s become a bit of a tradition over the last few years and it’s taken on the feeling of a huge Chameleons Christmas party, people fly in from all over and it’s always sold out. Every one of them has been a blast to do and because it’s an Academy Room we can work with STS, the best PA suppliers in the country, and put really cool lights in. That’s great for us and for audience alike.

“Now that I’m not going to be touring over here so much I’m hoping the December get together is a tradition we can continue for a while. If past shows are anything to go by it’s going to be another fantastic night and we’re really looking forward to it. ”
As in previous years, Chameleons Vox will curate a line up friends new and old to join them for the occasion to ensure their audiences are suitably warmed up in the run up for the winter outing.

Returning for their second appearance at Home Is Where The Heart Is, we are delighted to welcome back Hulme heroes Dub Sex for 2016 line up. Widely considered as one of Manchester’s great ‘lost’ bands, the Peel-favourites will be riding the high of their last open armed reception in support of Chameleons Vox at Academy 2 back in 2014. Re-united and re-energised, the band will be bringing some fireworks of their own to Academy 2 this year as they mark their 30th Anniversary at the bash.

Further additions to the line up will be announced in due course.

Plus, carry the night on with the Official After Party in Union Bar with DJ Andy Woods (Smile/Unknown Pleasures) until late.

Post punk four-piece The Chameleons formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1981. Fronted by singer and bassist Mark Burgess, the band went on to release six studio albums and an EP, along with many Peel sessions, live records and compilations in a career spanning three decades. With a cult following hooked on their iridescent indie, Burgess has continued performing the material recorded during this time live under the moniker Chameleons Vox to an ever adoring fan base.

REVIEW: Cosmic Shambles – ‘It’s All Over Now’

0
Samuel Brunt

Before I start the review you’ll need to know that Cosmic Shambles is the name of a solo project put together by Samuel Brunt and that this track is an example of what we can expect from the forthcoming Cosmic Shambles EP. You can read more about Samuel and the project below.

What I expected from Samuel’s  description of ‘It’s All Over Now’ didn’t prepare me at all for what I actually heard. Far from being psych influenced indie, what this is actually is as fine as a slice of laid-back West Coast Psychedelia as I’ve heard in a long time. Think Spirit in their most mellow of mellow moods.

This a track that builds, at first there’s a laid back languid guitar line, then there’s some rather fine vocals that are set back in the mix. There’s some really nuanced use of effects going on here, that really help the mood. It’s not at all flash or overdone, it’s just stripped back. Less is very definitely more. What it’s building to is a guitar outro, again it’s not flash it’s just, well, right. It could actually be longer if truth be told.

If you’ve read my other reviews on this site you’ll know that I’m a big fan of music that sounds organic – you know music that isn’t tweaked to hell by software. This track has organic in spades. Whether it is or not, it sounds live.

This track is about mood and atmosphere for me, what the song is actually about isn’t that clear to me but I just don’t care. In my head I’m sitting out in the western deserts of the US looking out across the landscape.

If this is – as Samuel described it – a demo of what of we can expect from Cosmic Shambles in the future, I for one will be keeping an eye out for the EP and I hope to be able to catch them live.

The Info

Cosmic Shambles is Samuel Brunt’s solo project, rising from the ashes of the band Youthful Fancy. Samuel is a student at the University of Leeds. This song is the first release he’s produced as part of the Cosmic Shambles project and it is a demo to show what is expected from the new EP. So far it has been played on BBC Leeds and in his mum’s car!

The EP is currently being recorded in Leeds with other students coming in and collaborating with recording techniques. They are aiming for it be ready for release early in the new year. The idea is record about eight or nine songs and choose the best ones and create an piece of work they can give to people for free at gigs and on Soundcloud and couple of videos on Youtube. At the moment it is simply called Cosmic Shambles though they may change that before they release.

TOUR & SINGLE NEWS: The Big Moon announce tour and single – ‘Formidable’

0

Directed by the band’s long standing collaborator, Louis Bhose. The video was filmed in the heart of the British Peak District.

The Big Moon say: “Formidable is a song that’s important to us all and it felt like for once, it wasn’t appropriate to make a mega fun, LOLZ video. That said, we didn’t want to make a super earnest band video either. We had a day off in between cities on our autumn tour so we drove to the beautiful Peak District and smashed out the song in the back of the van. It’s a van that we’ve spent more time in than our own beds over the last year. The wonderful Louis Bhose was once again the creative visionary at the helm of this video. We hope you like it”

SINGLE NEWS: Dead Fairy release debut single ‘Dead Eyes’/’The Devil Seems Like A Pretty Nice Guy’

0

Having caught Dead Fairy playing at Oxjam Huddersfield recently – and what an experience that was. The question was whether this would capture the huge huge energy the band have live. And I am happy to say yep it does.

‘Dead Eyes’ is a storming track, it’s all grinding noise and clever tempo changes. It reminds me of, of all things, The Dead Kennedys. Lyrically – because I like good words – it’s actually rather  good. ‘The Devil Seems Like A Pretty Nice Guy’ is a short sharp shock of a track. Really great stuff.

The single was recorded at Fruit Trade in Hull, by Mikey Scott.

The single is available on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify

TOUR NEWS: Sophie Ellis-Bextor announces 2017 February & March Tour

‘Familia’ is Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s sixth studio album and follows her #4 charting and silver certified album ‘Wanderlust’, which marked a critically acclaimed change in musical direction for Sophie. Following suit with her last record, ‘Familia’ was also co-written, produced and arranged by acclaimed singer-songwriter and good friend Ed Harcourt and was recorded in London with a close-knit group of musician friends.

Discussing her new album as “the bolshier, more extrovert little sister to Wanderlust”, ‘Familia’ was introduced by the Radio 2 A-List track ‘Come With Us’, which is an instant disco-pop anthem. Second single ‘Crystallise’ offers a different glimpse into ‘Familia’ and is a romantic track that opens with a soft tempo before building into an impactful string laden, emotive chorus.

Sophie says; “Everyone has the potential to fall in love and Crystallise is about how easy it is to realise it if you let yourself. The ability to love has been there since the day you were born.”

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: The Slow Show album ‘Dream Darling’ out today & tour dates for November

0

‘Dream Darling’ is the sublime new album from The Slow Show, out today on Haldern Pop Recordings. The first single from the album is ‘Ordinary Lives’, available to stream & download now on iTunes and Spotify.

‘Dream Darling’ is an album that any adult who’s lived a little can identify with; there is a hard-won optimism in its 10 graceful songs. This is music made by five men who, as singer Rob Goodwin explains, have “gone through the typical life-changing experiences that men in their late thirties and forties experience”. Whether that’s the romantic regret of the Tindersticks-inflected drama of ‘Breaks Today’ or overcoming loss in the album’s towering centrepiece ‘Ordinary Lives’, this is music to live in. Listen to ‘Dream Darling’ on Soundcloud

There are few bands who are aware of how potent a weapon silence can be in their music. As their name implies, The Slow Show have both a magisterial beauty to their sparse songs and the confidence to let their spellbinding four-minute stories find their mark. Rarely since The Blue Nile has a band created such a powerful, fully realised world from what initially appears such a minimal framework. Having gone on tour in Germany and Switzerland almost immediately after the band formed in 2010, The Slow Show are a major cult concern and festival regulars in mainland Europe, where they’re signed to Haldern Pop Recordings, the label formed by the team behind the successful festival. At home, their music has been championed by DJs at BBC 6 Music and Radio 2 ever since their debut EP, 2012’s ‘Brother’.

After taking four years to assemble, last years debut album ‘White Water’ was a more aggressive, angry affair, topped off by Goodwin’s mordant baritone vocals. It’s a startling rumble that bears comparison to Leonard Cohen and Mark Lanegan but, on ‘Dream Darling’, Goodwin has honed his vocal range to become a compelling storyteller. He’s a singer who’s now able to narrate the jilted-at-the-altar heartbreak of ‘Last Man Standing’ or ‘Hurts’ tale of a man offering redemption to a sex worker with the necessary levels of wit and pathos, as well as convincingly crooning into the mic.

‘Dream Darling’ was recorded at a farmhouse in the Lake District and produced by Goodwin and Fred Kindt, The Slow Show’s keyboardist. The band would start at 8am and record until 2am, with the night-time studio sessions partly inspired ‘Dream Darling’s title. “It’s an album written in the dark and worked on late at night. It feels quite a dreamy record. The alliteration is deliberate – I think alliteration is an official theme now for The Slow Show, following the band name and ‘White Water’ for the first album title.”

Having experimented with orchestration on ‘White Water’, they were determined to push the classical influences further this time, recording with a choir in Berlin and letting them carry the vocals in places – most notably the soaring wordless finale ‘Brick’, which is the perfect, tear-jerking climax for the album’s theme of change.

The album’s other key guest is local Manchester singer Kesha Ellis, who sings the devastating duets ‘Hurts’ and ‘Last Man Standing’. “I don’t find traditionally ‘great’ singers so interesting. Kesha doesn’t sing much, but the texture and tone in her voice are beautiful.”

While they’re proud of Manchester’s heritage, musically The Slow Show stand apart, influenced more by Sigur Ros than New Order or The Stone Roses. “But seeing how many great bands come from Manchester makes you realise you can make it, and that’s important,” says Goodwin. Dream Darling is a record that shows anything is possible too. Any change and upheaval can be overcome. No matter how gentle the beauty of their songs, The Slow Show are a band worth shouting about from the rooftops.

The Slow Show: Rob Goodwin (vocals); Fred Kindt (keyboards); Joel Byrne-McCullough (guitar); James Longden (bass); Chris Hough (drums)

They follow it up here with an equally explosive production, but one that casts darker shadows and lingers longer in the psyche. Taking a page from dramatic non-fiction, ‘Love You To Death’ finds Tegan and Sara mining their own lives to investigate complex relationship dynamics.
