SINGLE REVIEW: Hunter-Gatherer – ‘Killjoy’

0

This is the second release from the band I’ve reviewed – the first was ‘Run My Mind’ (read our review). That single really impressed me – I love loud dirty guitar driven rock, would this as well?

Cutting to the chase early in the review – as I do sometimes – it does, it’s a cool thing. It’s still as guitar driven but it’s more alt-rock than ‘Run My Mind’. The guitars are not as raw and dirty. It’s alt-rock in a kind of loud/louder/quiet/louder sort of way, it has those soaring vocals that alt-rock do. Drums pound, the guitar has a power that you feel inside, and there’s some way cool bass in there.

But crucially it has a tune, you can hum along to it. And it’s damn earwormy, by the second listen the song was just stuck there. And it has something of anthemic feel to it, it’s bloody huge.

It’s one of those songs that sounds better the louder you play it, so turn it up, way up, and get ready to rock out. This is one fab song, go listen.

The info

Hunter-Gatherer are from Pickering, North Yorkshire. They are a three-piece band who blend the frequencies of 1990s Seattle rock with the energy and intensity of modern acts such as Kendrick Lamar.

Sam Womack – Vocals/Guitar
Kristian Ward – Vocals/Bass
Bron Bury – Drums

SINGLE REVIEW: Hollow Doors – ‘Hindsight’

0

I’ve been hugely impressed with the other two releases I’ve reviewed from Hollow Doors, and this is no exception. And by the way there’s another release next week.

I’ve got used to Hollow Doors doing their own thing, but this was something that came as a huge surprise. It’s something I can only describe as soulful 70s’ rock – impassioned vocals, tasteful lead guitar. Once I’d got over my surprise, and picked myself up off the floor, I took another listen and fell for this in seconds flat.

For those searching for a touchstone I’d suggest Sifaka but without the psychedelic undertones that that band gives us. I might even reach for the term Nu-Soul but it’s perhaps a little rocky for that.

Things to love about this – that lead vocal, that guitar that basically solos through the whole song, the changes in tempo from slow-ish to fast and back to slow-ish again, production that sounds just right for this in a kind of somewhat retro way. And that’s before I get to the lyrics – it’s like not only are the band doing this musically but lyrically as well, this is something you’ll have to check out for yourselves.

And although it’s different to the previous releases, it still has something that marks it out as Hollow Doors, something I just can’t describe but it’s there.

Look Hollow Doors are a band you should be checking out, this release is something you must check out, it’s bloody fantastic.

SINGLE REVIEW: Mega Happy – ‘I Sit Next To An Empty Seat’

0

It’s been a while since I reviewed a release from Mega Happy so it was good news to hear of a new single.

I did wonder whether the gap – which seems huge – between the band’s last release and this had been the result of a change in direction. This isn’t thankfully the case. Look I know this sounds like I’m criticising bands who change their sound, I’m not, I love a band who do different things. It’s just that I love Mega Happy’s off-kilter angular sound.

And yes, this song has that off-kilter angular sound, it also has that Mega Happy ‘we mix unexpected things together’ thing. In this case it sounds like indie as played by New Order – it has that New Order throbbing melodic bass with a jangly indie thing going on over it. And then just for the sheer joy of it they throw in something of a Orange Juice sound in there, just for japes.

What this adds up to is something that leaves you dancing around the room, full of joy, with a grin on your face. At least musically. Lyrically, if I’m getting the right handle on the words, it’s actually quite a sad song. But this, my friends, is what Mega Happy do, they mix it up, they come at you from unexpected directions.

I’ve loved all of the band’s releases but this is something else, it’s a step up, a big step up. It’s like they’ve condensed what they do into one brilliant song. A brilliant song with a great tune, great playing, their own unique sound and great words. Can you ask for anything more, I for one can’t. This is a must listen people, go get some mega happiness in your life.

SINGLE REVIEW: Richard Carlson Band – ‘You Can’t Stop (I Can Feel It)’

0

Sometimes I come across a release from a band new to me, and I just HAVE to tell you all about it. This is the case with Richard Carlson Band’s ‘You Can’t Stop (I Can Feel It)’. Although they’re from Manchester, given that I have a bit more time these days (and don’t we all), I decided to give it a spin. And that was it, I got it, I loved it. Oh and you should know that this is the band’s first release.

The band identify as being art-rock/sludge-pop, that should give you some idea of where they are coming from. Although there’s kind of a punk edge in there, a punk edge that’s slowed way way down. And if you listen, if you really listen, you’ll get a certain psychedelic vibe in there.

‘You Can’t Stop (I Can Feel It)’ takes those ingredients and turns them into something menacing – bass rumbles in a fuzzy way, killer guitar sprinkles itself over the top of that and there’s way clever sparse drumming. There are also some rather cool out-there keyboards that have a feel of slowed down Door’s keys. Over this the lead vocal is spoken, not sung, this gives an extra edge of menace, of doom, of foreboding. The band provides sung vocals in a sort of chorus I guess.

And this thing doesn’t build, it kinda sits there at this level, it occasionally leaps into life, but if you’re expecting a huge release of tension, you’re going to be disappointed. But this just adds to the menace, and that’s a wonderful thing.

I, as I’ve already mentioned, love this track – it’s accomplished, clever, and is the sound of a band doing something that is completely their own. This is completely beautiful in very much its own way.

Message from the band

‘The release will be available on all major streaming platforms as soon as possible but Dittomusic don’t seem to know how to distribute a single on the day of the release or reply to emails.

‘A video and the limited edition 7” physical release will also be available in the coming weeks but due to the current goings on we’ve understandably had to halt the progress on that…

‘In the meantime you can stream or buy from Bandcamp’

The info

Richard Carlson Band are an art-rock / sludge-pop band based in Manchester who, despite only having been a band for less than a year, have crafted their own unique sound. Richard Carlson Band cite a punk influence but exchange blistering tempos for lurching mid-tempo menace.

‘You Can’t Stop (I Can Feel It)’ will have an initial limited edition release of 25 lathe cut copies with covers handmade by the band.

SINGLE REVIEW: Blue Kubricks – ‘Heroin’

0

It’s a funky rocky thing ‘Heroin’. It is more rocky than funky to be honest but it’s damn funky. It kinda reminds me of stuff of my youth – you know that ‘when rock bands discover funk’ thing. The thing is I’m guessing Blue Kubricks started like this because there’s not a sign of that slight awkwardness it led to in the past all too many times, way too many times.

So it does all sorts of those rock things – like vocals on the edge of human hearing, damn fine guitar, that rock song drop out section – but with an edge of funk, those drums rock people – they don’t rock as such they funk, but I’m not sure that’s a thing, you know what I mean though.

Lyrically the song explores autobiographically the effects of being famous. I might be wrong in detecting a hint of ‘tongue in cheek’ in the lyrics but the words are actually more compelling than they might at first listen. I was left with a smile on my face after really listening to the words.

When I read what the band did I didn’t expect to like this release as much as I do, which is loads, I keep finding myself reaching for this. It’s a damn fine cool song, it rocks. Play loud and proud, people.

Writing together and gigging for about a year together and we played O2 Leeds last year’.

SINGLE REVIEW: The Sheratons – ‘Raving And Drooling’

0

Indie rock comes in many flavours, The Sheraton’s take on it in ‘Raving And Drooling’ is bloody raucous punky rock’n’roll. It’s a blast of fucking glorious noise, a blast of glorious noise with a frankly dangerous level of swagger. This song positively drips attitude. It’s a song ready for a night out with its mates, a night where anything can happen.

Guitars roar, they roar in a punky sometimes kinda metally way – I swear it sounds something a bit like Motorhead right at the start, and that guitar break right at the end, hmm I have my suspicions keeping those to myself. Vocals are perfectly fucking sneery, plenty of bloody attitude there.

This, people, is a riot, turn it up loud – loud as you dare, lose it, repeat until you can’t do it any longer, shot of Jack, do it all again. Simple as.

CAMPAIGN NEWS: Grassroots Music Venue Crisis Fund

0

On 30 March Music Venue Trust launched a Grassroots Music Venue Crisis Fund, calling on the music industry, cultural sector and high net worth individuals to contribute towards extending our existing Emergency Response Service to meet the needs of the current crisis and safeguard the nation’s grassroots music venues. Although they have a long way to go to reach their target of £1million, MVT are delighted to share the news that they have received 3 significant donations which have enabled them to appoint 13 part-time coordinators to the national team.

Music Venue Trust has a core team of 5. During April, May & June they will also have a network of Regional & National Coordinators working with them to talk with every venue within the Music Venues Alliance (692 venues across the UK and growing). Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have one coordinator each, while England has been divided into regions so that every coordinator handles 50-80 venues within a geographical area.

The job of the coordinator network is to ensure that every venue understands the advice relevant to them (musicvenuetrust.com) and has applied for all of the government support in their country. They are also advising on fundraising, dealing with local authorities, suppliers, landlords and other pressure points, as well as providing an essential ‘someone to listen who understands your situation’ service. The coordinators can also ensure that only those venues who have explored all the support available and still face closure apply to the Grassroots Music Venue Crisis Service.

The GMV Crisis Service is now live at musicvenuetrust.com. An upgraded version of the Emergency Response Service, which last year secured 96 venues, GMVCS will enable MVT to direct the best professional support towards each venue in peril, connecting them with the network of Gurus (musicvenuetrust.com/gurus/) to tackle individual or collective challenges. The new funding will mean that more legal, financial and licensing expertise can be bought to fight each case. If all practical avenues are exhausted without success, and financial challenges remain, MVT will consider whether it can give direct financial assistance to a venue in order to alleviate specific challenges but this option will only be used as a last resort once all other methods to stop challenges have been explored.

MVT’s call out for donations to the Grassroots Music Venue Crisis Fund is aimed at corporations and high net worth individuals. They are seeking donations over £5K to help fund the GMV Crisis Service.

If you represent an organisation or would like to make a personal donation of £5k or more please contact Beverley at beverley@musicvenuetrust.com.

For individuals who would like to make a smaller donation to MVT, they are, of course, delighted to receive this support via the Go Fund Me page: www.gofundme.com/f/2pt5g8k BUT they would rather direct individuals to support their favourite venue at this point in time. They are encouraging all venues to make sure their crowdfunder or other fundraising initiatives are listed with Independent Venue Week (www.independentvenueweek.com/uk-venue-donations/) and Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.co.uk/venuedonations).

They are also working on an artist-led fundraising initiative in partnership with Independent Venue Week and Frank Turner.

0

On Easter Sunday (April 12, 2020), Italian tenor and global music icon Andrea Bocelli will give a solo performance at the historic Duomo, the cathedral of Milan, Italy, representing a message of love, healing and hope to Italy and the world.

Andrea Bocelli was invited to give this performance by the Mayor of Milan and the Duomo cathedral during this dark time that has wounded all of Italy. He replied, “On the day in which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I’m honoured and happy to answer ‘Sì’”.

There will be no audience present, and strictly no access for the public (in compliance with government regulations on Covid-19), but the concert will be exclusively streamed live globally on Andrea Bocelli’s YouTube channel, from 6pm UK time.

The Duomo, a national and international landmark, currently closed to all, will open its doors exceptionally for Andrea Bocelli who will be accompanied only by the cathedral organist, Emanuele Vianelli, playing one of world’s largest pipe organs. On a day symbolic of the renewal of life the carefully selected uplifting sacred music repertoire, specially arranged for solo voice and organ for the occasion, will include the Ave Maria setting by Bach/Gounod and Mascagni’s Sancta Maria. Andrea Bocelli’s participation is entirely pro-bono.

Bocelli, with the Foundation that carries his name, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF), has started a fundraising campaign to support hospital departments during the COVID-19 emergency. It is possible to donate through the GoFundMe campaign or by contacting the Andrea Bocelli Foundation.

Stay at home and watch Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Music For Hope’ livestream from the Duomo Cathedral in Milan on Easter Sunday, 12 April 2020, from 6pm UK time, 10am PST, 1pm EST, on YouTube.

The EP was co-produced by David Glover and Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka Self Esteem) and recorded with the Sheffield-based choir, Neighbourhood Voices, which was founded in 2017 with the aim of creating a safe space for Sheffield singers to find their voices. Inspired by female-led, modern pop and indie choirs, they now consist of 60 singers and performed with Self Esteem at her recent Sheffield show for independent venue week.

The announcement comes a week after Self Esteem’s self-curated three day digital festival PXSSY PANDEMIQUE with an all female-identifying line-up featuring performance artists, poets, comedians and musicians.

Chatting about Cuddles Please, Rebecca says: “After doing a run of special stripped back shows, I thought it would be nice to record some of the songs that work best in that format. I really love to sing the songs in their birthday suits. Neighbourhood Voices had been learning some of the songs anyway and suggested singing with me live and of course I jumped at the chance to have 30 women singing my feelings with me.”

Royal Albert Hall launches #RoyalAlbertHome, streaming a season of free shows on its website direct from artists’ living rooms

Royal Albert Home will open its virtual doors this week, as one of the world’s most iconic venues comes direct to audiences from artists’ living rooms with a programme of exclusive shows.

Rufus Wainwright will launch the series on Thursday 9 April, as London’s Royal Albert Hall keeps the venue’s spirit alive during its closure by presenting free sessions from performers’ homes.

The specially-curated opening week will also feature celebrated tenor Alfie Boe, indie sensation Baxter Dury and Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble, as well as singer-songwriter Ayanna Witter-Johnson, spoken word act Toby Thompson – performing a specially reworked version of his Edinburgh Fringe show – and cellist Peter Gregson, renowned for his reinterpretations of Bach.

On Monday 13 April, Hard-Fi frontman Richard Archer and vocalist Krysten Cummings will perform Hard-Fi hits alongside songs from their new collaboration, OffWorld.

The Hall will also present at-home versions of shows which have had to be cancelled, ensuring that the talent and practice that went into developing these events can be shared with the world.
