ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Queen Zee debut album out February, February 2019 tour

0

QUEEN ZEE have announced their debut self-titled LP and an eight date UK tour for February 2019. The album will be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats via the band’s own label Sasstone Records.

The recent QUEEN ZEE single, SASS OR DIE, was a call to arms that defines the band’s riotous ethos and energy. The anarchic, enigmatic band have rapidly established a cult following over the last year as they continue to defy conventions and subvert what it means to be a band. The album’s 10 tracks perfectly capture the mania of their now-infamous and raucous live shows, and firmly cements them as torch bearers of a new generation of British guitar bands.

2018 was an exciting year for QUEEN ZEE, culminating in a full UK tour in support of Dream Wife after SASS OR DIE made the Radio X playlist and earned John Kennedy’s track of the week. Earlier last year the band won PRS Flash Funding at The Great Escape Festival, which enabled them to put their madness into this debut record, and were then awarded PRS Momentum Funding to continue the journey. The band have also continued to gain attention at radio, earning Huw Stephens’ Tip of The Week on two occasions alongside notable mentions from Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing, soon followed by an invitation to the BBC Maida Vale Studios for a live session and interview aired on BBC Radio One.

Fronted by the peculiar and direct ZENA DAVINE [aka Queen Zee] the band is completed by co-founding member and multi-instrumentalist JASON TAYLOR-BROWN, alongside FRANKIE WORTHO [bass and vocals] ASH SUMMERS [keyboards, percussion and vocals] and Dave Bloom [drums and Percussion].

SINGLE REVIEW: Concrete Armbands – ‘The Brink’

0

Despite receiving the request to review their debut single rather late in the day (Ed: This isn’t generally recommended see ‘How to get a review on LSF) the sheer quality of Concrete Armbands’ debut – ‘The Brink’ – pushed me into making time to get a review done for release day.

The band’s brand of alternative rock is heavy, I mean way heavy, this thing majors on bass. I mean yep, so the band say Muse are an influence and you can hear that but there’s more than hints of post-hardcore here. This is musically by the way, there’s none of that hardcore vocal thing.

But, and it’s a big but, there’s a lot of space in the track so it’s not all out bludgeon. That said, push the volume and the bass on this and you’ll find various bits of your ceiling coming loose. Feel-wise it’s a bit stalky in places, it has these bits where the bass or guitar and vocals combine into something quite scary, the fact that it’s not that fast add to that. And while it’s not flashy playing wise, the feel is great, in fact the feel is frigging fantastic.

OK so I’ve got to give the bass playing on this track a huge shout out, it rocks. The vocals are also great, there’s a tone to them that I really love. The arrangement is fantastic, there’s a restraint that just lets the song shine through, it’s not overwhelmed by flashy guitar breaks, it’s all about the pulse.

If you like your alternative rock with a whole heap of heavy, go listen to ‘The Brink’. This is great stuff.

The info

Despite having been active for less than a year, this Sheffield-based alternative rock quartet are already making waves in the Sheffield gigging scene due to their unique blend of sounds and tight live performances. Taking inspiration from artists as diverse as Muse, Biffy Clyro, Royal Blood and Frightened Rabbit, their music is as engaging as it is unpredictable. They are currently taking time away from gigging in the run-up to the release of their debut single.

Ben Austin – Drums
Ali Hart – Bass
Josh Teggert – Vocals/Keyboards
James Thomas – Guitar

SINGLE REVIEW : The Seamonsters – ‘Blue Movie Baby’

0

It’s a sultry and moody thing this new single from The Seamonsters, well it is kind of, it has these bursts of guitar raucousness that thrill but it has this edge of something that makes it entrancing and captivating. And if you’re fooled into thinking this is just some indie pop thing right at the start, you just have to wait, you don’t have to wait for long, but just wait.

People who do the spot the 80s’ influence in their tracks won’t be left out, there’s lots, but they’re hints, feelings of influences, it’s very much their own sound. The most obvious 80s’ thing comes in at around 2.20 but it combines two things, one of these is something very much Human League – it’s the hand-claps people – and one is something that has a sort of post-punk sound going on – it’s sort of Cure-ish.

But the thing people is that this song rises above all that ‘the slightly retro sound of The Seamonsters’ thing that reviewers (including me I’m ashamed to say) have zeroed in on. Taken as a whole this thing is cool, it’s way way cool. It’s complex, it’s atmospheric and the playing is great. And for those of us that just love Naomi’s vocals they are sounding sweet, and so – I must say – are the backing vocals. The first time I heard it I thought ‘yep this is it, this is what I knew The Seamonsters would do, could do’. It’s slightly different, I mean yeah the song is moody and that’s a change, but the approach to the song, the music, the arrangement, has something that just sounds different. It’s not something I can put my finger on and say ‘well it’s because…’ but it’s just there.

One thing I can say is that it sounds like they do live, I mean I’ve only seen them once live (sorry this is very very poor) but their live sound sort of surprised me, The Seamonsters rock live, this song rocks, those raucous guitar bits rock. But it’s the slower and sultry bits that really grab your attention, they are smooth, so smooth, they draw you in, they wash over you, it’s a glorious thing.

I’ve been following The Seamonsters’ journey for a while now and they just seem to get better and better, this song marks some sort of arrival at a destination, a reaching of a significant point. If this this is an indication of what we expect from the band in the future I can’t wait for future releases.

TOUR & ALBUM NEWS: Carson McHone January/February 2019 dates and instores, ‘Carousel’ out 25th January

0

CARSON McHONE has shared Drugs, the second single from her forthcoming album Carousel.

The song was originally recorded by fellow Austin musician Chris Brecht. After getting permission, Carson did some rewrites and made it her own. Speaking to Ladygunn, she explains, “Drugs isn’t really about drugs at all, but it comes from that same dark place of needing to sate some desire or emptiness and being willing to use someone for that… It is about abuse.”

Stream ‘Drugs’ http://smarturl.it/carsonmchone

Years before Rolling Stone was praising Carson McHone’s rule-breaking roots music, the Austin, Texas native played weeknights in local bars like The White Horse, keeping dancers dancing and drinkers drinking. With her 21st birthday still in the distance, Carson entertained late-night crowds bearing witness to the good times and bad decisions that fill a busy bar. It was a rare, raw education. She pumped her music full of details from an early adulthood spent in the company of the heartbroken and high-toleranced.

“I was a kid when I landed those residencies,” she says of her days at The Hole in The Wall, where she began playing Friday happy hour as a 16-year-old, and The White Horse, where she eventually took over the coveted Thursday night residency. “I wasn’t even old enough to be in those bars and they became a home to me. It’s a dark thing when a bar becomes your home.”

Carson will embark upon her first ever UK tour, starting off with a slot at the AmericanaFest UK Showcase Festival in London on 29th January, where she’ll also be playing a free in-store show at Rough Trade East on the 31st.

Carson McHone’s new album Carousel is out 25th January 2019 via Loose, available on LP, CD & digitally.

ALBUM & TOUR NEWS: Beans on Toast ‘A Bird In The Hand’ out now, dates January/February 2019

0

BEANS ON TOAST is back with a landmark 10th album: “A Bird In The Hand” – out now.

Leading up to the release with a string of singles including ‘Another Year’, ‘Alexa’ and ‘Magic’, Beans and a full live band will now take his latest studio recordings to stages across the UK early in 2019. Full dates and details below.

Greeted to a warm reception upon release, the new album stands as one of Beans’ most successful to date – charting in its first week at #3 in the Record Store Chart (UK Official Album Chart); #4 in the Singer-Songwriter Album Chart (iTunes UK Album Chart); #4 in the Independent Album Breakers Chart (UK Official Album Chart); and #32 in the Independent Album Chart (UK Official Album Chart).

Sticking firmly to his tradition of releasing a new album on the same date each year, 2018 was always going to be a big deal for Beans on Toast with album double-digits on the cards. Fittingly for this anniversary, Beans got back in touch with Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons, who had produced his first album a decade ago, and together they hatched a plan.

Utilizing the hospitality of Lovett (whose band were spending much of their time at London’s legendary Church Studios making their next record), Beans found himself enjoying the same incredible facilities during off days and late nights, to lay down “A Bird In The Hand”, along with with the help of in-house engineer, Riley MacIntyre.

Calling in mutual friends, Ben and Beans arranged a team of incredible musicians, including Mumford & Sons’ live drummer Chris Mass and Dutch artist Christof van der Ven on guitar. Ted Dwane offered bass on a couple of tracks, and Ben himself took up piano and production duties to bring a clear, contemporary, and unique vision to the Beans’ songs. The result is arguably Beans on Toast’s finest album to date. The album is diverse, easily switching between folk ballads, punk bangers and swing numbers without ever losing sight of itself or its listener.

A lot has changed in the years since the debut album, in both the world and also in Beans’ personal life, this is reflected in both the sound and the subject matter of this new album. Most notably in the stand out track ‘MAGIC’, a song about the birth of his daughter earlier this year. An emotional and honest account of what can usually be a difficult subject to tackle, Beans achieves this without being crass or soppy, almost a trademark of his these days.

Songs about his daughter are scattered through the album, she’s clearly been quite the inspiration. Aforementioned single ‘ANOTHER YEAR’ offers a touching tribute, whereas ‘HERE AT HOMERTON HOSPITAL’ is an ode to the East London institution where she was born and its wonderful staff.

There are no songs about getting intoxicated and, surprisingly, not a single profanity on the entire album. This wasn’t purposeful and was actually pointed out after the album had been mastered. However, that doesn’t mean Beans has run out of things to say about the world. ‘BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH’ tackles the catastrophic plastic pollution disaster we’re living in, whereas ‘ALEXA’ looks at the future of voice-activated Internet devices and the oncoming Amazon world domination. It’s funny but thought provoking, another one of Beans trademark.

Over the course of his huge career Beans has become something of a cult national treasure. What seemed like a throwaway festival act has evolved into something much more important, a voice of truth and honesty, cutting through the bullshit. A consistent and reliable modern-day troubadour, not afraid to speak his mind. Always touring, always writing, recording and releasing music. Playing every festival under the sun and always, always, telling it like it is.

When asked if he thought this was a political record Beans said:

“I think everyone already knows where I stand on Trump and Brexit, and if not, they can listen to my last two albums. This album is more personal I guess, focusing on family and the world on my doorstep. That’s where my heads been this last year”

Speaking of the song ‘MAGIC’ Beans said:

“I’ve been playing this song live for a while now, and it definitely strikes a chord. More than any song I’ve ever written, I think. After my shows, the conversations used to all be about after parties or ecstasy, now more often than not it’s about parenting or newborn babies. Which is fine with me”

And commenting on working with Ben Lovett

“I have so much respect for Ben. I couldn’t quite believe he said yes when I asked him if he fancied doing another record. I presumed he’d be way too busy, but somehow he managed to find the time. I thought he was joking when he said he’d sorted it for us to work in The Church Studios. Not only were we in such a legendary space to record, but we also had all of Mumford’s guitars and instruments set up, mic’ed up and ready to go. It might just be the biggest blag I’ve ever pulled. Punching well above my weight. The sessions had a really special magic about them and Ben took my songs into new waters. I’m well happy with the record. I can’t wait for people to hear it. I also can’t wait to make another 10 records.”

‘A Bird in the Hand’ is a celebration of love, life, family and the world in which we live. It’s about appreciating what we have and in that, it is a triumph.

GIG NEWS: Upcoming The Breakfast Club presents gigs in Hull

BAND NEWS: The Vryll Society part company with frontman, January/February 2019 dates cancelled

0

The Vryll Society have parted company with frontman vocalist Mike Ellis due mainly to creative differences.

Unfortunately this means their scheduled in Jan/February 2019 tour will have to be cancelled. All tickets will be refundable from point of purchase.

The Vryll Society will continue as a band with new material on the horizon.

“We would like to apologise to all the fans who have bought tickets for upcoming shows, and to all involved in organising them. We’ve achieved many great things with Mike and we can’t thank him enough. We’ve had some great times as a band with Mike over the past few years and wish him all the best for his career in the future.” Lloyd Shearer (The Vryll Society)

“It’s been a great journey with many highs and some lows but I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together, especially our album. I wish the lads well and I will also be continuing to write music myself and will share it with you in the near future” Mike Ellis

While disappointed to have to let down their fans with this announcement, The Vrylls can reveal they are very much continuing the band and Lloyd, Ben, Ryan and Lewis are currently working on new material , which they look forward to sharing later this Spring. “We are very excited about the coming months, we have so much planned and can’t wait to see you all again. You’ll be hearing from us very soon.”

More Vryll Society dates will be arranged for later in the year.
